3,000 civilians evacuated from Mariupol

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the evacuation of 3,000 civilians from the southern city of Mariupol on Friday.

As Part Of The Evacuation work led by the Red Cross, a humanitarian corridor was opened towards the city of Zaporizhia. Although it was stated that the process was hampered “due to Russian military obstructions”, Zelenski said in a statement yesterday, ” We managed to rescue 6266 people from cities in the war zone, 3071 of them from Mariupol .”

It was stated that civilians were removed from Mariupol by more than 40 buses and brought to Zaporizhia, about 200 km to the north. The devastated Mariupol became the city that suffered the heaviest destruction during the occupation. According to Ukrainian officials, at least 5 thousand people died in the city, which is of strategic importance for the land connection from Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014, to Russia, and 160,000 civilians trapped in the city are in danger of starvation.

On the other hand , the UN announced that the number of Ukrainians who went abroad increased to 4 million 137 thousand 842 after the occupation that started on February 24. As 6 out of 10 refugees cross into Poland, the war has left over 10 million Ukrainians homeless
