5 Best Portrait Photographers In Binghamton

Spread the love

Recently I had the privilege of living in Binghamton, New York. Like any City it had its pros and cons. It had some very nice restaurants, parks and hiking trails with easy access.  All in all it was a nice place to lay my hat for a while.

However, what I really couldn’t help to notice was how artistic the city was. It seems Binghamton takes a lot of pride in its artists. From art walks to galleries such as the Bundy museum and Roberson center; every season brought with it a new delight for artists to showcase their skills for locals.

During these events there seemed to be a plethora of portrait photographers.  Many of whom I met along my walks or saw their images hanging in these galleries. As I stopped in local shops, I also saw they had their business cards posted on the walls by the door.  It seemed the opportunity to have your photo taken in Binghamton was endless.

But for all those out there looking to have their photo taken by a talented artist in Binghamton, which one do you choose?

From my own personal experience as a portrait photographer I thought I’d give an overview of the 5 best portrait photographers – in no particular order, that I found hiding in Binghamton, New York.  But to give context to my winners, we must first discuss what my definition of excellent portrait photography is, or is not.

What is Portrait Photography?

When one mentions portrait photography a few things come to mind. Whether it’s the random guy your office hires to give everyone cheesy headshots for your linked in profile or that over the top gentleman capturing photos in movies like the devil wears Prada. You might even associate most portraits getting taken by the paparazzi.

However, in reality there is a huge industry for a more artistic side to portrait photography.  I see truly brilliant portrait photographers as ones who can capture the artistry of a portrait, a unique perspective that makes the portrait more than just a photo.

So without further discussion, and in no particular order, here is my selection for the 5 best portrait photographers in Binghamton, New York.

  1. Memories By Bravo

First on our list is an up and comer Julio Bravo. Julio has a unique high fashion vibe, mixed with urban street photography in his work. What really stands out is his old school raw style of editing that doesn’t make images look mass produced. Between that and the posing of his subjects it’s no wonder Julio’s work has been landing in magazines time and time again. Bravo’s motto is “History takes time. History makes Memory” which is definitely fitting for his work.

  1. Alana Davis

Next on the list is Alana Davis. Owner of Clinton st Studios, With a degree in Fine art and photography from the Pratt institute it’s no wonder her images are so stunning. With an editing style that truly brings you back to the days of photos on film; flipping through volumes of vintage albums.  It’s a style that is hard not to appreciate.

What really stands out with her work is how things seem naturally exposed in a way that looks like you are peering into a memory. When you look at her work you feel a sense of having been there even if you never met anyone in the photo. Taking photos that are remarkable just because of how natural they are is a dying art that Alana is successfully breathing life into.

Third on our list is Bryan Wark. With the tag line “I don’t want to be remembered for my photography, I want those I photograph to be remembered” Bryan seems to set out to capture raw hard to deal with emotion in his portraits, addressing things like loss, suicide and domestic abuse.

A lot of his work has a dark and aged editing style to it and will remind you of the lyrics to emotionally driven songs. It’s no wonder his work is constantly being used and praised within the music industry.

  1. Nox Images

Our 4th portrait photographer, Nox Images, is the only one on our list who doesn’t appear to have their own personal website. However don’t let that stop you from checking out their work which can only be explained as a mix of horror movie nightmare fuel and undeniable intrigue.

Many great artists love pushing boundaries that spark conversations and there is no denying the Nox does exactly that.

  1. Laskys Photography

Last on our list is Joshua Lasky. The absolute definition of an artist. Josh spends his time studying famous pieces of work of all mediums and then finds a way to paint with light in order to recreate them within his own experimental style. Above all else what sets Joshua apart from most new age photographers is that he lives for the art he creates.  His motto is that a photograph is not truly complete until it’s ready to print and you can hold it in your hands. There is definitely a lot to learn from this sentiment.
