2023 began with many surprises on film, many films have been nominated to the Oscar and some of them had not been thought of possibly being candidates.

Le Pupille of the multi-awarded Alfonso Cuarón was nominated to an Oscar for best short film of this year; this is a story about childhood in difficult times, innocence and even about the difficulties of accepting the impositions of a religion when we have nothing else.

Without a doubt, Cuarón is one of the favorites to win, and one of his best friends and colleague, Guillermo del Toro, is nominated for best animated film with Pinocchio.

Alfonso Cuarón was born in Mexico City and has been working, at least for 40 years in the world of film, for which he has accumulated one success after another, such as Gravity (2013), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2005) which have received several awards from the Academy and in festivals around the world.

The universe of Le Pupille develops in Italy during WWII, in a context of uncertainty because of the war, while a group of girls that live in an orphanage begin to understand what is happening outside, but they see it through their own eyes, covered by the bars of what sometimes seems to be a jail and sometimes can be home.

There is no question that these are complex times for film, the saturation of content in the media has made it harder to find original proposals, free of pretention and that, if it isn’t too much to ask for, feed the spirit of the audience.

This short film does fulfill its objective, with a story that may seem simple but that convey deep situations, there is a complete reflection regarding the world, cruelty and beliefs that are challenged in the least appropriate time.

And speaking of Alfonso, Olmo Cuarón, his son, is following his footsteps and has shown interest in animation in film which he has said in his social media accounts that he wishes to dedicate to it in a few years and for which he will probably have professional preparation.

Olmo Cuarón is 18 years old and will surely soon begin to study film in the university, as well as animation and production, just like his father.  He will probably have a great future in the big screen and it won’t be long before we see his first professional works.
