After the establishment of FDC in 1958, Fateh Lohani built ‘Asia’ in 1960. He also wrote the screenplay for the film. Nazir Ahmed was in overall management of this film. Abbasuddin Ahmed was supposed to direct the music of this film, but he could not do the work of the film. After his death, Abdul Ahad and Samar Das completed the work of music properly. Grameen Mela is shown in the first scene of this film. Various kinds of flutes and drums are played at the fair. Jharna, Kamal Lohani, Jacob, Altamas and Anwar danced in a puppet show at the fair. This is the credit of choreographer GA Mannan. What is in a village fair, its image is revealed in the film Asiya.

Bangladesh is still a strong village in real terms. Therefore, in the normal flow of Bangladeshi films, villages or rivers or crop fields cannot be avoided. And there are village fairs throughout the year. Even in the rainy season, the fair floats by boat. These scenes have been filmed in many of our films. Sometimes it has come out explicitly, sometimes as a parallel accompaniment. The scene of Grameen Mela in the movie ‘Keettankhola’ directed by Abu Sayeed with the time-honored drama ‘Keettankhola’ by the playwright Selim Al Deen captivates the audience. Released in 2000, the film has been the highlight of the Grammyala, which is why ‘Keetankhola’ was acclaimed after its release. It also won the National Film Award in 2000.

The story of ‘Keetankhola’ has developed around the fair. How some people are controlling the society and politics by capitalizing on village fairs has been highlighted in ‘Kittankhola’. The director had to wait for various fairs for almost two years to shoot the film. Photographs were taken at fairs in different parts of the country. Then in Tareq Masood’s film ‘Matir Moyna’ [2002] we see the successful implementation of Grammela. One of the main attractions of the village fair is the village song, which is also highlighted with absolute affection. The genre of folk music developed around the village fair. Tareq Masood has shown enough munshiyana to present it beautifully. The Grammy Fair ballad is an enjoyable instrument in his films. He also drew scenes of boating and puppetry. The first film directed by actress Mausumi is ‘Sometimes Clouds, Sometimes Rain’. [2003] The film depicts the cultural events of the Baishakhi Mela. Nayakraj Razzak got up on the stage and recited Gazi Mazharul Anwar’s ‘Love letter written in one Baishakh, read it in solitude’. Bashir Ahmed also won the National Film Award for his song. The image of New Year or Baishakhi Mela gets a prominent place in it.

Gazi Rakayet’s film ‘Mrittika Maya’ [2013] has also taken the form of a village fair. The story revolves around the happiness and sorrows of the Kumar community. At the center of the film is a banyan tree. Every year Baishakhi fair is held under that tree. The people of Kumar community are vocal against the evil attempt to cut down that tree. Collective struggle began to save the culture to save the roots. Mahmud Didar’s ‘Beauty Circus’ [2020] also focuses on the fair. The circus comes to the fair, the journey comes, the kavigan comes, the Ramayana song comes. Grammela means not only entertainment, but also the regulator of rural economy! That fact has been highlighted in ‘Beauty Circus’.

Jaya Ahsan is in the role of circus owner and female magician. Although the conflict of the influential people of the village with the female artist is the main preoccupation of this film, the village fair has been highlighted with importance. A song from the movie ‘Raat Jaga Phul’ directed by Mir Sabbir shows the traditional scene of the fair starting from puppet dance, bioscope, merry-go-round. Similarly, a song about the fair has been included in SA Haque Alik’s ‘Galui’. In our film, Grammela has been highlighted centering on various festivals. There is no way to avoid the village fair when looking for roots.
