Retired U.S. Army Lt. General Keith Kellogg says Russian President Vladimir Putin may have realized he could not win the ongoing war in neighboring Ukraine. He made the remarks on a Fox News program on Monday. After reviewing Putin’s speech on Russia’s Victory Day, Keith Kellogg thinks the Russian president’s remarks indicate that he does not think he can win. This has been reported in a report of US media Newsweek.

May 9 Russia celebrates Victory Day. On this day during World War II, Nazi Germany lost to the Soviet Union. On this day, speculation spread in the Western media that Putin might announce an escalation of the war in Ukraine. But Putin’s remarks did not go as far as analysts had hoped. In his speech, Putin did not announce any new plans, such as a military coup.

Former US Vice-President Mike Pence in 2016 Lt. General Keith made Kellogg his national security adviser. He has previously served as Chief of Staff of the National Security Council and acting National Security Adviser under former President Donald Trump.

“I think Putin understands that he can’t win this war, he’s looking for a way to end the war,” said the retired U.S. general. He wonders how to do it.

Kellogg has suggested that Putin may try to establish the occupation of the Donbass region as a “success” in the war. In Monday’s speech, the Russian president mentioned Donbass more than once. Not once in the whole speech did he utter the word ‘Ukraine’.

At the military parade, Putin said Russian troops were fighting in Donbass for the security of our people, our motherland Russia.

According to a report in the New York Times, Kellogg said Russian troops had destroyed three bridges about 12 kilometers northeast of Kharkiv. This is an indication of the retreat of the Russian troops. If they had wanted to move forward, they would not have destroyed the bridge. When you have to flee in a hurry, the bridge has to be destroyed.
