We use a vacuum cleaner to keep the home clean and tidy. Like the gry hot spot, a vacuum cleaner does a perfect job. Sadly, it is the most neglected machine regarding cleaning. Some people do not clean their vacuum cleaners because they do not know they should. One study by the University of Arizona researchers showed that some dirty vacuum cleaners host faecal bacteria and E.coli.

Virtually any vacuum cleaner has mould. Bacteria and mould are bad for human health once inhaled. If some of your family members have allergies, they might worsen when they breathe in vacuum dust consisting of mould and bacteria. To avoid all this, clean your vacuum cleaner often.

How often should I clean my vacuum machine?

The best thing is to clean the vacuum cleaner components separately. For instance, brushes and bristles encounter a lot of abuse when cleaning. Therefore, clean them after each use by removing trapped hair strands, loose strings, and grim. Cut entangled strands and strings with your scissors instead of pulling them out. Lastly, clean your brushes and bristles with a disinfectant to kill pathogens.

The next thing that requires cleaning every other day is the vacuum canister. Try to empty the canister after using the machine a few times a week. When you notice that the dust is half or two-thirds full, empty it. If you can, empty the can every day after every use. Regular emptying of the canister does not leave enough time for the pathogens to replicate and invade the household. Above all, an emptied vacuum cleaner offers better performance than a dirty one.

Clean the filters every month. A vacuum has filters that play a crucial part when cleaning. Locate them in your machine and remove them according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Shake the filters and clean them under cold running water. Leave them to dry. Note that some filters may not be suitable for cleaning with water. So do not submerge yours without getting this knowledge first.

After about a year and a half, make sure you deep clean your vacuum cleaner. Take it apart and clean every component with hot water, dish soap, and a scrubbing brush. Some parts may require soaking for a few minutes before scrubbing. Once you clean and rinse the parts that can contact water, dry them well. With a can of compressed air, eject any dust particles that might still linger in unreachable spaces of the vacuum cleaner. Wipe the external components before assembling your machine again.

Should I throw away my old vacuum cleaner?

After maintaining your vacuum machine so well, it might last longer. However, experts recommend buying a new vacuum cleaner for one decade. Any vacuum machine older than ten years can emit more contaminants than before, even if you maintain it well. But that is not a problem because most cleaners do not go past the eighth year unless you protect them well. They have a shorter life than ten years. Once yours hits the 10-year mark, get a new one.

Conclusion

You should clean and maintain your vacuum cleaner as we have recommended. It will perform well and last longer. In addition, cleaning your vacuum means that you can protect your home from moulds and bacteria. As a result, you can keep your entire house clean and disease-free.
