Elon Musk stated on Tuesday that if his agreement to buy Tesla is completed, he will reinstate former President Donald Trump’s suspended Twitter account.

Musk’s comments at the Financial Times’ Future of the Car conference are his first public acknowledgement of what has been widely predicted since the entrepreneur unveiled ambitions to purchase Facebook for $44 billion.

Musk has previously stated that Twitter should be “hesitant to remove stuff” and “very careful with permanent bans.” He termed Twitter’s plan to ban Trump in January 2021 a “mistake” on Tuesday.

“I believe it was incorrect to prohibit Donald Trump, and I believe it was a mistake,” Musk stated. “The perma-ban would be lifted. But, in my opinion, and, to be clear, Jack Dorsey shares this perspective, we should not have perma-bans.”

Following Musk’s statements, Dorsey, Twitter’s cofounder and former CEO, said Tuesday that he “agrees” that permanent bans on Twitter users are unnecessary. “There are outliers,” he continued, “but permanent prohibitions are often a failure of ours and do not function.”

Musk’s comments were met with silence on Twitter.

Following the January 6 Capitol Riot, Trump was permanently barred from Twitter for breaking the platform’s anti-violence incitement guidelines, a move made by Dorsey, according to the business. Trump’s account was also banned or suspended on other social media networks.

Trump, for one, has stated that even if his account is reinstated, he would not return to Twitter, instead pushing his own social media business, Truth Social, which has so far struggled to gain traction.

“Banning Trump from Twitter would increase Trump’s voice among the right, which is why it’s ethically wrong and flat out foolish,” Musk stated on Tuesday at the event.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said that his purchase of Twitter and Trump’s return are not yet finalised. “I’ll state that I don’t own Twitter yet,” he explained, “so this isn’t something that will absolutely happen, because what if I don’t own Twitter?”

There are still some doubts about whether Musk would go through with the deal, or whether the recent drop in Tesla (TSLA) stock will affect his capacity to fund it. On Tuesday afternoon, Twitter (TWTR) shares was trading at $47.70, significantly below Musk’s bid price of $54.20 per share, indicating market uncertainty about the deal’s chances of closing.

Musk has continued to talk about his intentions for the platform in recent weeks despite this. Musk has stated that his objective is to strengthen free speech on Twitter and to make it more transparent to users when the network takes measures that affect what people see on the site.

Musk also elaborated on his plans for content filtering on Twitter. Musk has previously stated that Twitter’s content monitoring will be limited to things which countries have declared expressly unlawful – and no farther.

However, Musk admitted on Tuesday that there might be a wide spectrum of problematic information that he would like Twitter to police. Apart from unlawful content, Musk has listed two additional types of content that may face penalties: speech that is “damaging to the world” and speech that is “wrong and nasty.”
