Part of the battle is finding the right storage. While you could lug around an awkward, dilapidated box, you’d be better off investing in a portable Milwaukee tote tool bag. This way you can easily transport your tools while keeping them secure, organised and easy to grab on the go.

But what kind of items should you put in there? We’ve been spending increasing amounts on home tools and equipment in recent years, but there’s no need to overspend on fancy gadgets just yet.

Here are seven of the fundamental items to add to your arsenal if you don’t own them already. Most are inherently simple – but why overcomplicate things?

Screwdrivers

The humble screwdriver helps you tighten and loosen screws, as well as popping open paint tins. You’ll need a set with different heads and sizes, including slot, Phillips and Allen heads, to suit different screws and avoid damaging them.

Spanners

Spanners give you a firm grip when working with nuts or bolts. Again, there’s a range of sizes that correspond to different fastenings, as well as offering alternate grips. If you want to streamline, socket sets are a little pricier, but can be adjusted to different grips.

Hammers

Whether you’re fitting parts or breaking them apart, you likely don’t need an explanation of what a hammer does. It’s good to know the variations available though, which include versatile claw hammers as well as ball peins, clubs and mallets.

Tape measure

Accuracy is essential on many DIY jobs – and having a reliable tape measure will keep you on the right track. Spring-loaded models with slide grasps are most convenient. Just make sure you choose a measure with the correct units, such as millimetres and inches.

Pliers

Pliers give you the purchase you need to loosen fasteners, pull nails, cut wire and more. It makes sense to invest in a couple, such as adjustable pliers with off-set jaws, locking pliers and needle-nose pliers, which are handy for tighter, more delicate applications.

Utility knife

Crucially, you’ll want to make sure your utility knife is retractable and lockable. Over 2,700 people needed hospital care after accidents with non-powered tools in the year ending April 2021.

Torch

Having good lighting is crucial for working in awkward spaces, ensuring you can work accurately and safely. You might want one large, carriable torch, as well as a penlight for tighter work areas. A headlamp could even be worth it if you’re regularly working in dim conditions.

Are you missing any of these basic tools from your collection?
