As we have always said, badges have a history and not that, but everything related to the British Army is historical. There can be several reasons for that, but one thing that we got out of it was a sense of responsibility. Only a responsible individual deserves to put on a badge; otherwise, it would be just an accessory.

Whether you are serving in the Army or a member of School scout, you are supposed to take the liability of not just your actions but of others too. A badge might seem just a piece of cloth for many people, but to the scout, it’s their ultimate identity. In high school, we still remember going crazy about it — and then, time flew.

In this ongoing article, you will read everything about scout activity badges. Therefore, put on your seatbelts and enjoy the ride.

Let’s get back to history!

The custom badges UK you see today are nothing like the ones that used to be awarded in the past and we are talking about 1919. Seems a distant past, right? Anyways, so back in the day, scout volunteers received badges crafted out of woods, which is quite interesting. However, over time it became a vivid dream since everyone got confused about the origin and development of these wooden badges.

The inspiration behind wood insignias!

One could only achieve these wood insignias after the successful completion of leader training. At this point, you might be thinking, who came up with the idea of these insignias. So, here is how it all started… the inspiration behind these badges came from a necklacebrought to Africa by Robert Baden Powell, the founder of scouting at the time. He served in the British Army in Africa in 1888, and that was the time when he happened to visit a camp that had been abandoned for a long time.

He found so many things in the camp and one of them was a wooden necklace. The neckpiece inspired him so much that he took it with him. But since you can’t wear a necklace after your training, it was then decided that we should craft something similar to this one.

Different types of Scout Activity Badges!

Today we have various insignias that differ the ranks of military staff and scout volunteers. But to get one for yourself, you might need to join the troop because purchasing them won’t feel right! Below, we are about to mention different types of scout activity badges just so that you get to know everything about them.

  1. Membership badge

This is the first badge you get right after you join scout troops. This is awarded to every scout volunteer when they take the oath to serve as a scout member. These are usually the woven badges for clothes and uniforms.

  • Activity insignia

Activity insignias or badges can be earned through different activities. There are 59 badges in the whole scouts, including two extras, activity plus, and instructor. The criteria for making these badges are pretty simple. You are required to gather several activities together related to the same activity. For instance, learning about the water, boats, and rules while you are in the ocean. When you know everything about boating, you’ll be awarded this badge. The following badge is blue with red edges.

  • Stage activity insignia

Light blue badges with purple outer edges and a number at the bottom, these stage badges are used to let you know your stage or position at the moment. These badges are not different than standard activity badges. The only thing that separates them is that stage activity badges allow you to earn a badge according to your skill level.

  • Challenge awards

Then comes the challenge, and we know what you are thinking right now. It’s, isn’t all the badges required to complete a challenge? Well, no, each one of them has different requirements. Challenge awards can be earned by taking up any course against your interest or anything that scares you. You can choose from 9 challenges to earn the badge in this category of scout activity.

  • Adventure challenge
  • Creative challenges
  • Personal
  • Skills
  • World challenge
  • Team lead
  • Outdoor
  • Teamwork
  • Expedition
  • Chief scout gold awards

Chief scout gold awards are given to those who can complete all the nine challenges in the category mentioned above. These nine challenges might seem easy, but remember that there is always much more than what meets the eyes.

  • Joining in award

These are for the ones who are always ready for everything and won’t hesitate to roll their sleeves up. If you are in scouts then you can earn this one every year.

  • Leadership stripes for patrols

When the scout troops are split up into different groups, these are known as patrols. Each one has two leaders, a leader and an assistant patrol leader. They are recognized and awarded with these leadership stripes upon good and responsible behavior.

  • YouShape awards

The most common but interesting one. When young volunteers learn how to take the lead and speak, they are given a YouShape badge!

Why was there a need for scout training?

Another question that might pop into your head today is why it is important to train young adults. Well, soon after WWI ended, things got pretty complicated because of the bloodshed. Moreover, a good amount of adult scout volunteers got killed during that time, so the need was pretty clear. And the good thing is that the scout membership grew so much during this period.

Now, as they say, necessity is the mother of all inventions. Authorities needed something to differentiate between trained and non-trained ones. Insignias came in handy, and they started producing wooden badges for the leaders. But they had their criteria; they introduced a whole another course to get the badge named the wood Badge course.

The course was established so that participants can have a sense of responsibility and how it feels to be a part of a scout troop.

Takeaway

So there you have the history of an actual scout activity badge! Everything evolved over time, and so did these activity badges. But that does not mean there are no more wood badges! We still have them today and are awarded to the adult scout members when they are done with their leadership training.
