He was administered the oath of office by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Raja Pervez Ashraf, on the instructions of the Lahore High Court.
Hamza went to the high court to arrange the swearing-in ceremony. But as he could not take oath, he approached the High Court in the third phase on Friday. However, he was elected Chief Minister of the Punjab Assembly on April 16 with 198 votes.
Meanwhile, just hours before Hamza was sworn in, Punjab Governor Omar Sharfaraz Cheema “rejected” the resignation of former chief minister Usman Bujdar. As the reason stated, the constitutional condition was not met.
Who is this Hamza Shahbaz?
Hamza, who was sworn in as the 21st Chief Minister of Punjab, is the eldest son of Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.
He was born on September 6, 1964 in Lahore. He completed his LLB from London School of Economics after graduating from Government College, Lahore.
Hamza officially entered politics in the 1990s. Participated in the 2008 Punjab Provincial elections as an independent. He lost there.
However, he was a member of the National Assembly from 2006 to 2013 and from 2013 to 2017.
In 2016, he won both the National and Provincial Council seats. He later decided to resign as a member of the National Assembly.
In the same year, he contested for the post of Chief Minister of Punjab. However, Pakistan lost to Tehreek-e-Insaf candidate Usman Buzdar and was appointed Leader of the Opposition. He is the Vice President of the Pakistan Muslim League.
