From temp files, to cache files, from thumbnails to old updates – Windows 10 excels in collecting files that may make your operating system faster and more convenient to use, which is great when you accidentally delete and important file and need to retrieve it, windows keeps a copy stashed away for you in the recycle bin. However, many of these files often go completely unused and simply clog up valuable disk space.

There are a number of advantages freeing up space on your hard drive, the foremost being simply having more space for your own documents and media. Other problems can be prevented and resolved by freeing up disk space: When little disk space is available for a computer’s operating system it can begin to run more slowly, this is in part due to the extra energy required to manage and process all the data, this can also cause a build up of waste heat. Operating system and program updates may also fail to install, simply because there is not enough space to contain them. In extreme cases, running a harddrive close to or at it’s maximum capacity can cause it to fail completely, losing all the data stored on it!

However, this can all be prevented by regularly clearing unused files off the hard drive. This can be achieved through a number of methods, though perhaps the easiest is to clean up system files. System files in windows 10 can be cleaned up by using the disk cleanup tool, which can be found and used by following these steps:

1) Open file explorer, and select ‘this pc’ from the left hand column.

2) Under ‘devices and drives’, right click on your main system drive (usually labelled C:) and select ‘properties’ from the drop down menu.

3) Select the ‘general’ tab at the top of the properties window that has now opened.

4) Towards the bottom of this window, under ‘disk cleanup’, select ‘clean up system files’.

5) A new window will open, again with the option to select your main system drive (C:). After selecting your drive, select ‘ok’.

6) Disk cleanup will now scan your system for files that can be safely deleted. Once the scan is complete, a new window will open displaying all the types of files that can be deleted. simply check the boxes next to the file types you wish to delete and select ‘ok’.

7) You will be prompted to confirm your selection, simply select ‘delete files’ and disk cleanup will delete all the selected files.

In Windows 10, storage space can also be managed using ‘storage sense’ which automatically clears out unused system files for you, to ensure this feature is enabled, and configure it to suit your needs, follow these steps:

1) Open the settings app by pressing the windows key + i on your keyboard.

2) Select ‘system’ from the options that appear.

3) Under ‘storage’, select ‘configure storage sense or run it now’.

4) Toggle ‘storage sense’ to ‘on’. by default, storage sense will automatically delete temporary files and files in the recycle bin that have been there for over 30 days.

5) To change these and other options, select ‘change how we free up space automatically’. from here you can change when storage sense runs and what types of files are deleted.

6) Once you have made your changes, select ‘ok’ to save them.
