Okay so you’re looking for a job and want to impress your employer by displaying your skills and your projects..

Now the best way to do that is by building a resume website which will contain all your information, like your skills, your projects and your contact info. Believe me, a professional website will increase the chances of you getting selected for your dream job.

Introduction

In this post I will cover three things, how you can host your resume website for free, how you can make your website and how you can make it visually appealing to your employers for the best results.

Hosting the Website – Hosting your resume website for free won’t be any problem, as it will be a static website and not a dynamic one, so we’ll just use Github Pages as our host.

Making the Website – Of Course the most important thing in making a resume website is the way you make it, its features, its speed and the overall look of the website.

Making it Visually Appealing – The first impression is often the last impression, so making your website visually appealing with things like proper fonts and proper animations are also very important.

Setting up Hosting

First let’s start with setting up hosting for our website, for hosting we’ll use Github Pages, which is a free service by Github that allows us to host static websites and files.

To begin you will need to create a new github account at – https://github.com.

After creating a github account, create a new github repository, make the repository public and click on ‘Add a .readme’, after that create the repository.

Once the repository is created go to its settings, in settings go to ‘Pages’, now in Pages settings in ‘Source’ section click the ‘None’ button and select ‘Main’ and click the save button.

This will enable github pages on your github repository, now just below that you will get the Custom Domain option where you can add a custom domain, so buy a unique domain name and after that follow the steps below to connect it to your github repository.

After buying the domain name go to its settings and go to ‘DNS’ settings, in dns management settings add a new CNAME Record where the domain is pointing to your github url.

Your github url will be in the format – your-username.github.io

After adding the CNAME record go back to the github repository settings and in the custom domain option add your domain name and click save. Your domain name should be now connected to your github repository.

To check it just open your domain name in an incognito tab.

To host your website in github just click on the upload files option and upload your website files.

Creating the Website

Now comes the part that is the most important, it’s creating the website. For this i will just provide you some suggestions and a yt video that you can watch and learn how you should design your website.

Okay so there are two options available to you, first one is creating your website using pure html, css and js Or using Jekyll Themes.

Now it’s up to you on what method you want to use. If you ask me then i’ll recommend you to make a single page website using css cards, which will look very professional and very minimalist.

Believe me, nobody wants to scroll through a very long resume website, making it basic, simpaliatic and right to the point is very important.

So a single page website with all your information is a great idea.

Still if you want to make a multiple page website using css and html then you can see this yt tutorial by Online Tutorials – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnjHCmaUVPg.

Making it Visually Appealing

The next most important thing you should always try to make perfect is the overall looks of the resume website, make sure you keep these things in mind –

  1. Font – Make sure to use a proper font with proper font size and font colour, because nobody wants to see grey text in white background.
  2. Colours – Use Vibrant cheerful colours that make your employers happy when they visit your resume.
  3. Use Images – Use proper high quality images, but don’t over use images.

Designing a resume website that sells is a very tough thing to do, but with the right decisions you can easily make a proper resume website that will make people that visit your website go wow.
