The trial of a member of the Islamic State (IS) has begun in a U.S. court. His arguments are set to begin on Wednesday (March 30) after the jury election on Tuesday (March 29).

The name of that IS member is Al Shafi Al Sheikh. News Deutsche Welle .

Born in Sudan, Al-Sheikh moved to the United Kingdom as a child. He went to Syria in 2012 to join IS. There he was a member of a group of four. The group was known as the British band ‘Beatles’ because of their British accent.

Al-Sheikh, 33, is accused of killing American journalists James Foley and Steven Sutloff, and aid workers Peter Cassig and Kayla Mueller. Al-Sheikh’s Beatles group is also said to be involved in the abduction of at least 26 people from 15 countries.

Some of the abductees were released by the government of their country in exchange for money. Others were strangled to death for not receiving the money, and the video was released.

Another accomplice, Alexandra Coty, 38, tended to care for the prisoners. There are allegations that they tortured the prisoners in various ways including water-boarding and electric shocks. During the trial, they will testify against a number of detainees who were tortured.

Al-Sheikh and Koti were captured by Syrian Kurdish forces while fleeing to Turkey in 2016. They were later handed over to US forces in Iraq. The United Kingdom revoked their citizenship that same year.

They were taken to the United States for trial in October 2020
