IIT Delhi has launched a mobile app that allows inhabitants of the national capital to report flooding in real time, which will aid academics in developing an early warning system for urban floods.

The app IITD Aab Prahari, created as part of the civil engineering department’s Water Security Hub project to address water security and sustainable development concerns, is now accessible on Google’s Play Store.

Communities and individuals can use the app to report floods in their area. The data collected by the app will be shared with researchers at the Water Security Hub. The goal is to assist the local administration in taking prompt action.

“The citizen science approach is used in the smartphone application.” “This mobile software has the potential to revolutionise the way communities and governments manage with floods,” said Prof A K Gosain, the project’s senior researcher.

The app will be launched in Delhi. The project is part of a global collaboration between IIT Delhi’s Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer and the UK Research and Innovation.

“Through this project, we are creating system frameworks in conjunction with the Hub and other stakeholders for planning, monitoring, and assessing water resources using an integrated approach,” stated Prof Dhanya C T, the Hub’s main investigator.
