India denies sending troops to Sri Lanka

India has denied the media’s speculation about sending troops to Sri Lanka. The Indian High Commission in Colombo on Wednesday strongly denied the allegations. They said India fully supports Sri Lanka’s democracy, stability and economic recovery. Earlier in the day, local Sri Lankan media reported that former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family had fled to India. The Indian High Commission denied the allegations, calling them “false and utterly false.”

There are rumors about the position of Mahinda Rajapaksa after his resignation last Monday. According to various media reports, he has left the government office and residence ‘Temple Tree’.

India said on Tuesday that New Delhi fully supports the island nation’s restoration of democracy, stability and economy.

The Indian High Commission tweeted, “India is sending troops to Sri Lanka. The High Commission strongly rejects such speculative news in some media and social media.” Such news and opinion does not go with the position of the Indian government.

Mahinda Rajapaksa left the official residence of the Prime Minister before dawn yesterday. Earlier, thousands of protesters broke through the main gate of the residence and stormed inside. The Prime Minister and his family members were trapped there.

News then spread that Mahinda Rajapakse had taken refuge with his family at a naval base in the northeastern city of Trincomalee. The distance from the capital Colombo to the naval base is about 260 kilometers. Protesters also gathered there.

Sri Lanka is facing the worst economic crisis in the history of the country due to some wrong decisions of the government along with the coronation. The country has been in a severe food, fuel and medicine crisis for months. Inflation has risen sharply, power outages continue. The situation is exacerbated by the debt crisis and the foreign exchange reserve crisis.

In this situation, protests have been going on in the country for more than a month demanding the fall of the government. A state of emergency has been declared in Sri Lanka since last Friday. A curfew was then imposed to quell the protests.

Meanwhile, dozens of houses of Rajapaksa loyalists were set on fire during protests across the country on Monday. Rajapaksa’s ancestral home in Hambantota was also set on fire. The army has been given the power to ‘shoot at sight’ to stop the violence.
Mahinda Rajapaksa was asked by Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to resign at a cabinet meeting on Friday to resolve the stalemate.
