Ischemic Heart Disease in Poland – An Undervalued Risk

Every year, over 100,000 Poles are dying of ischemic heart disease. In 90 percent of cases, people affected are ones with high blood pressure, diabetes, overweight, or those who abuse alcohol and eat unhealthily. So, in fact, it often occurs as a consequence of things over which we actually have influence.

What do we know about ischemic heart disease?

The data presented on April 24 by the National Health Fund show that ischemic heart disease is one of the most common causes of death. In Europe in 2016, the disease contributed to approximately 20% of all deaths, as well as almost 50% of deaths from heart disease. When it comes to mortality in Poland, between 2014 and 2016, ischemic heart disease led to 10.1% of all deaths in the country. The facts are clear: coronary heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in Europe.

Despite many cases of ischemic heart disease, mortality from this disease has been decreasing in recent years. In Poland, in the years 2000–2017, the age-standardized mortality rate decreased by 52%, while in 36 countries belonging to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development by 42%.

The likelihood of developing ischemic heart disease increases due to many factors. Some of them, including age, gender and genetic predisposition, are beyond our control. There are also nine modifiable factors that account for as much as 90% risk of developing the disease. The factors are:

  • smoking
  • hypertensio
  • elevated cholesterol levels
  • diabetes.

Other risk factors for coronary heart disease that we can potentially influence include:

  • improper diet
  • extra weight and obesity
  • alcohol abuse
  • insufficient physical activity
  • psychosocial factors

Therefore, some recommended methods to dramatically lower heart disease risk and normalize the blood pressure (or as the Polish call it – prawidlowe cisnienie) are:

  • stopping smoking. Tobacco smoke, regardless of its source (pipe, cigar, cigarette ), is considered a risk factor for atherosclerosis. Second- hand smoke is also a risk factor.
  • lowering the concentration of LDL cholesterol in primary prevention below 130 milligrams / dl, in secondary prevention below 100 milligrams / dl (according to the latest indications, even below 70 mg / dl in patients after coronary artery surgeries and in people with diabetes).
  • adequate blood pressure control – optimal values ​​120/80 mm Hg.
  • limiting alcohol consumption. The consumption of alcohol in the amount over 70–80 g per day increases the risk of cardiac death. Moderate alcohol consumption (in the amount of 1-2 standard doses of alcohol ), especially in the form of red wine (due to the content of polyphenols), has a beneficial effect.
  • increased physical activity, which lowers LDL cholesterol and increases HDL.
  • lowering the triglyceride level below 150 mg / dL. Treatment of overweight or obesity to restore optimal BMI in the range of 20-25.
