It is not possible that you have never heard of the name Jonita Gandhi, especially if you are an SRK fan. Well even if it doesn’t strike you right now, it’s okay. You must have first heard Jonita Gandhi in Chennai Express, a product of Vishal Shekhar. Before putting her feet in the Bollywood industry, she was a viral YouTube Star where she uploaded videos since the age of 17 years in collaboration with Aakash Gandhi. She was born in India but was raised in Canada and has been popular in India ever since her releases in Manmarziyaan, Sarkar, Highway, Padman, OK Kanmani, among others. She was also featured in AR Rahman’s album Raunaq.

She is popular amongst her audience because of the ability to sing in a variety of languages including Hindi, English, Gujarati, Malayalam, Bengali, French, Telugu, Tamil, Punjabi and Kannada. Coming from an Indo-Canadian community she is usually known as Toronto’s Nightingale. She was loved by many fans when she did a collaboration with a South Asian A Capella group called Penn Masala. With her beautiful voice and determination, she has successfully developed a career as an award-winning playback singer. The first song of hers which topped the charts was Sau Tarah Ke from the movie Dishoom which was a collaboration with Pritam Da. 

Growing up years

When she very small, her parents moved from New Delhi to Canada, where she spent most of her life until she moved to Mumbai for her career few years back. Her father was also a musician and an electrical engineer and thus always encouraged her to follow her passion of singing. In 2005, she performed her first music gig as a Christmas party hosted by her father and since then she has loved the idea of singing. As a kid she performed at numerous cultural events, while simultaneously pursuing a double degree from the University of Western Ontario in Business and Health Sciences. During her University days, she underwent an internship at CIBC World Markets but she never stopped her love of singing. Later she took formal training in Western and Hindustani Classical singing. As a kid she loved travelling with her family and cherished all the karaoke nights at her place.

Before transforming the idea of singing into a full-time career, she made sure that she achieved good educational credentials so that if the plan didn’t work out, she would always have a path to follow. She always knew that music was an inevitable part of her life. She always believes that she ventured into the music field at a point when there was an immediate need. She immediately caught appreciation from Amitabh Bachchan, Salim Merchant and AR Rahman when she uploaded her music video on YouTube which was a cover of Pani Da Rang with more than 5 million views. 

Career hit

At the age of 17, she began uploading her music videos in collaboration with Aakash Gandhi on YouTube. Within a short span of time, she became very popular amongst her audience and had a large number of opportunities in her hand. She mostly sang cover songs on YouTube, a few of which include Tum Hi Ho, Suhaani Raat, Someone Like You and Tujhko Jo Paaya and her first cover was recorded at her father’s recording studio, Sargam Studio. An opportunity with Sonu Nigam gave her the chance to excel in the field on Playback singing where soon she sang for Chennai Express starring Deepika Padukone and Shah Rukh Khan.

Due to her hard work, she has been often nominated for numerous awards. She has worked with great musicians in the industry like Pritam and AR Rahman. She was also featured with AR Rahman in a concert film One Heart. She performed at the 2016 Jubilee Games held in Dubai along with Amit Trivedi and Salim-Sulaiman on MTV Unplugged. The song which has successfully fetched her wide recognition and numerous awards is The Breakup Song which she sang at Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.

She has also sung “Blessings from the sky” under AR Rahman’s composition for a Hollywood movie called ‘Pele: Birth of a Legend”, which is a biographical film on the life of the Brazilian footballer Pele.

In 2016, she saw numerous award nominations for her songs like The Break Up Song fetched her nominations for all sorts of prestigious Bollywood awards in the Best Playback Singer (Female) category. She also won a title at the Mirchi Music Awards for her song Gilehriyaan (Dangal).

Jonita is new in the industry and is still at the budding stage making her an inspiration to numerous who are still trying. She still works hard to excel towards her goal to be the best vocalist and is still striving to explore more creativity in her independent music.
