The traditional way of building is changing. Water-resistant and environmentally friendly materials are being made to create MDF using old wood shavings and fiber. 

MDF is also known as Medium density fiberboards. They are mainly used in making speaker Boxes, furniture, flooring, and also cabinets. They have a smooth finish and are made from wood fiber.

Process of How the Boards are made

  • various raw materials are collected which include wood residue and shavings. 
  • They are then prepared and impurities removed. A metal detector is also used to detect metal.
  • They are then sent for pressing which involves water removal as an important step in the process. 
  • The resin which is controlled is then added to give it tolerance and then a scalping roll is used to give uniform thickness.
  • They are then cut and trimmed and then compressed again before being allowed to cool and then cut into final boards.
  • They are then given a smooth finish and applied abrasive and also a silicon carbide is used to give it a finer result. This process is called panel sanding.

Types

Bendy

This type of MDF  is known to be flexible. Its flexibility allows you to shape it according to your preference when using it. You are also able to laminate or paint on it. It is mostly used by architects due to its flexibility.

Ultralite

It is fairly heavy and more durable than the regular mdf board. Due to its durability, it is used in temporary galleries, theatre sets, mobile homes, and trade show booths. Softwood fibers are used to manufacture them and have an excellent smoothness on their surface.

Fire Retardant

These types of boards are found in commercial buildings and offices. In places where building requirements in regards to the fire materials used need to be taken into consideration, they are the best boards to use. Their legitimacy also has to be checked.

Moisture resistant

These types of boards are designed for places that have damp environments. They are manufactured with a special material called resin which prevents them from swelling due to the humid conditions. They are mainly found in bathrooms and kitchens. 

  • It is then finished by cutting into different sizes and strips which are then laminated by coating with an adhesive.

Advantages

  • As a result of its structure, they don’t easily crack but rather warp.
  • They are affordable and easy to get due to their low price.
  • They are environmentally friendly as they are made from recycled timber scraps and old wood.
  • They are also easy to manage especially in situations where you need a temporary solution.
  • Easy to design and look good.
  • They are good for places that are humid, especially kitchens and bathrooms as some are resistant to moisture.

Disadvantages

  • Though used in humid conditions exposure to extreme heat is not good for the boards.
  • They are not able to support too much weight.
  • They can be heavy at times, especially in cases where a shelf is being mounted it will need extra support.
  • The processing of the boards takes longer and requires patience in order to get quality and value for your money.

Conclusion

Using MDF could be the way to go in the near future as it saves time and is inexpensive. It also moves us away from the traditional use of wood but depending on your needs your choice may vary.
