Factories that produce products for the domestic market will also ensure a safe working environment like other export-oriented industries, including ready-made garments. This was stated by Salman F Rahman, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Private Industries and Investment at a workshop organized by Bangladesh Federation of Industries and Merchants Association (FBCCI) and International Labor Organization (ILO). The workshop on health and safety to increase productivity was held at the FBCCI office in Motijheel, Dhaka on Tuesday. The FBCCI said in a press release.

Speaking as the chief guest at the workshop, Salman F Rahman said that the Prime Minister has directed to ensure safe working environment in all the industries of the country. He added that many owners were reluctant to start reforms in the garment sector. But now this sector is getting the benefits of decent working environment. Similarly, the pharmaceutical industry of the country has also gained worldwide reputation due to its quality factories.

The workshop called for successful implementation of government policies to secure all sectors, said ILO Technical Adviser George Fowler. He said that if the workplace is safe, it is beneficial for both the employer and the worker.

Labor and Employment Secretary Ehsane Elahi said security, quality and production are intertwined in the development of the industry. When the working environment of the factory is improved, the productivity of the workers as well as the quality is improved. He said that work is underway to make Bangladesh child labor free by 2025.

FBCCI Vice President Mustafa Azad Chowdhury said that having the opportunity to work safely in the workplace is a fundamental right of workers.

Also present at the workshop were FBCCI Vice President Amin Helali, Habibullah Don, Director Hasina Newaz, Shami Kaiser, Rezaul Karim, Harun Aur Rashid, Ferdousi Begum, Amjad Hossain and others.
