One of the fallout effects of the global pandemic has been the changes in the way that commercial operations of all sizes and industry sectors negotiate day-to-day business activity.

In the same way that the commercial world has experienced a shift to the internet as a primary place of business, similarly, the pandemic has seen a significant move towards remote working, with many employees operating from a home office as opposed to the traditional centralized office.

This working method will very likely continue well into the future, with many businesses adopting the practice on a more permanent basis. There are significant advantages to operating a home office for those entering the “remote working” world as new business start-ups.

Choosing a permanent location

The home office should still be thought of as a separate location to the home, even though it exists within it. Psychologically, there should be a physical and mental delineation between the realm of the office and that of the family home, even if that office technically only comprises a desk and an office chair.

The home office location should ideally be a permanent area, whether it be a separate enclosed room or a study nook.

Privacy and freedom from noise and unnecessary intrusion may be an issue if others occupy the house during proposed working hours. Consider things like acquiring portable room dividers if necessary. A privacy divider is typically upholstered or padded, which assists in sound deadening.

Office plant & equipment

Dependent upon the business activity, a minimal level of office equipment will be required. For those working as remote employees, the company will likely provide an inventory list of equipment. Alternatively, an allocation of funds may be provided for equipment purchase.

For the private start-up, consider drawing up an inventory list of necessary office equipment – items like computers, office printers, and filing cabinets should be planned beforehand from the point of view of physical size and location (if space is at a premium), as well as purchase cost.

Communications equipment

Typically, external communications are the vital beating heart of the home or remote office setup. Consider the availability, speed, and reliability of any internet and broadband services, and ensure they can handle the level of input/output required for daily business activity.

Similarly, mobile phones and landlines should be assessed for reliability and readiness for tasks.

Computers – either desktop or laptop – should be assessed as fit for purpose, and necessary communications and conference programs like Zoom or Skype installed and checked.

Storage considerations

Whether self-employed or working as a remote company employee, the security of business-related documentation should be considered. Dedicated, lockable storage solutions may be necessary to ensure the protection of company files and documentation from damage or loss.

If dealing with virtual company assets like data and computer applications, ensure security and back-up protocols are in place.

Summary

For the new start-up, creating the perception of a big office feel in a small office space is fast becoming a viable and affordable option.
