PMP is an abbreviation for the project management professional. The PMP is a title anyone who has passed the exam can obtain (the name is entered in the register, an entry appears in the personal account, a certificate and a badge are sent by mail). Anyone can also check whether their colleague is certified and whether the title is “active” in the online PMI registry.
The last clarification is essential. The Institute (PMI) is struggling with the appearance of “rotten stumps” – specialists who received their title decades ago and retired long ago, have forgotten the nuances of project management, but continue to act as experts and professionals. The Institute has introduced a recertification cycle (three years).
Wouldn’t you like to consult a doctor who last saw a patient a dozen years ago? Probably a pseudo-experienced one (but you won’t trust a manager who once practiced). This idea does not mean that you need to retake the exam every three years (doctors do not get a new diploma every five years either).
Still, you need to confirm your “contribution to the profession” (convince the PMI that you worked in your specialty or attended industry training or conferences, published articles, and so on). Collect a certain number of hours in total (called “development hours,” professional development units [PDU]), and then the certificate is renewed.
That is why (the title of PMP is not easy to get, it must be kept up to date) the certificate gradually began to command respect from employers.
The Institute annually updates statistics on the impact of the PMP title on the manager’s salary (not all countries are included in the upload). For 2017, respondents in the countries surveyed earned, on average, almost a quarter (23%) more salaries for PMP holders than those who did not.
In addition, upon receiving the title of PMP, its owner signs a code of professional ethics. For violation of this code – the title can be taken away. So the employer can be sure that a person entered in the register with an active status: passed a difficult professional exam, maintains skills and gains new knowledge (otherwise, the certificate will not be renewed) and is not noticed in blatant unethical behavior (otherwise, they would, upon request, be dealt with by PMI units on ethics).
In some countries, “getting used to” PMP is still underway. So, there are fewer PMP specialists at all (as of 2017, there are less than a million of them globally, and a fraction of a percent of this amount in every country). Therefore, many employers do not set the PMP title as a strict requirement in vacancies (they understand that this will significantly reduce the flow of applicants), but they recognize it as a plus. For example, some large employers indicate PMP as a big plus.
The Pass Rate
In 2005, PMI reported the first PMP test pass rate of 61 percent. Since then, the PMI has discontinued publicizing the exam pass rate and the passing score. Why? According to them, “given changes in the exam itself, the passing percentage was not a credible predictor of exam quality or efficacy.”
The format of the new PMP test differs from that of earlier iterations. As previously stated, the PMP test questions are divided into three areas. So, with more simulations and minor memorization-type problems, they’re more similar to what you’ll see in a real project management job.
The current pass rate now ranges between 60% and 70%. There is no particular figure for it since it is not made publicly known, unlike the previous years. Over 60,000 people participate in Project Management Professional certification programs each year to improve their project management abilities. It’s a time-consuming procedure, but it’s well worth it.
