Don’t pack yet! So you’ve decided to take a holiday. Fantastic. You’ve been saving up, squirrelling away your spare change like a hamster. Good on you. But before you chuck your suitcase on the bed and fill it with flip-flops, sunscreen, and seventeen too many pairs of socks, there are a few things you might have overlooked in your holiday planning fervour. Let’s dive right in, shall we?

To Boldly Go Where You’ve Probably Gone Before

Travel is about adventure. It’s about stepping out of your comfort zone, about trying new things. But let’s be honest: it’s also about not ending up stranded in a country where the closest thing to a Starbucks is a suspicious-looking beetle that tastes vaguely of coffee when grilled. When choosing your holiday destination, consider your comfort level with the unfamiliar.

If your idea of ‘adventure’ is trying the decaf variant of your favourite latte, maybe consider a holiday destination where English is widely spoken and the food doesn’t wriggle on your plate. Remember, stretching your comfort zone is great, but tearing it can be less fun.

The Calendar Conundrum

What time of the year is it? No, not right now, but when you plan to jet off. Some places have monsoon seasons, extreme winters, or perhaps a national habit of shutting down everything for a month-long siesta (which sounds delightful but could leave you stranded in your hotel playing patience). For every hundred people who time their holidays perfectly, there’s one or two who decide to take a hiking trip during blizzard season and end up trapped on a mountain. Don’t be like those people.

Doing a quick Google search to find out what the weather, local festivals, and general atmosphere of your chosen place will be like during your visit is a small step for you but a giant leap for your holiday success. Being caught in a weather event would be bad, but finding out that the destination of your “destination holiday” is largely closed for business when you arrive there is worse.

The Baggage Behind ‘No Baggage’

“Travel light,” they said. “It’ll be fun,” they said. Here’s a thought: have you considered the luggage requirements of your destination? Going to the Arctic? You’ll need warm clothes, and they are not light. Planning on a shopping spree in Tokyo? Remember to leave enough space in your suitcase for all the kawaii stuff you’ll be bringing back. Each destination has its own specific perks and challenges, and as dull as it sounds, you need to familiarise yourself with all of them.

Remember, ‘travel light’ is not a commandment carved in stone; it’s more of a well-meaning suggestion scribbled in sand. Many a hopeful traveller has flown thousands of miles carrying nothing but hand luggage and lived to regret it after a few days.

The Unseen Attractions – Beyond the Brochures

Sure, everyone goes to Paris for the Eiffel Tower, but what about the catacombs beneath the city or the little bakery in Montmartre that does a croissant to die for? Consider doing a deep dive into your destination beyond the usual tourist traps. While we’re on the topic, perhaps reconsider going to Paris at all if that’s what you have in mind – Paris Syndrome is a very real thing, and some tourists require professional assistance because of it every year.

Looking into local blogs or social media accounts can give you a fresh perspective on the place you’re visiting and might just introduce you to some hidden gems you wouldn’t find in the glossy pages of your travel guide. The value of local knowledge should never and can never be understated.

Connectivity or Off-the-Grid?

Wi-Fi is the invisible tether of the modern world. Do you want to be connected during your trip, or are you planning a digital detox? Not all destinations are created equal in the eyes of the internet gods, and if you’re planning to Instagram every gelato you eat in Italy, you’ll want to make sure your chosen locale has solid internet access.

On the other hand, if you want a holiday from your email as much as from your office, choosing a destination with spotty Wi-Fi could be a blessing disguised as a frustration. Be absolutely sure about this, though – we’re all sometimes guilty of claiming we can go a week without checking our work emails, only to log in as soon as we’ve arrived at our hotel. Unplugging is harder than you might imagine.

Travel Companions: Friends, Family, or Frenemies?

Who are you travelling with? If you’re going solo, skip to the next section, you independent explorer, you. If not, bear in mind the preferences, allergies, phobias, and inexplicable dislikes of your travel companions.

Holidaying with kids? Check for family-friendly amenities. Travelling with your dog? Make sure the place is pet-friendly. Going with your friend who has an inexplicable fear of statues? Maybe don’t choose Rome. Remember: Blink and you’re dead. Don’t close your eyes, don’t look away, and don’t blink. We really hope you got that reference.

The Final Countdown

The last thing to consider is your budget. Yes, we’re mentioning it last because we know how easy it is to forget in all the excitement of planning. If you’re going to Las Vegas and planning on playing inside its casinos, for example, you’ll likely need more money than if you were playing at an online casino. You don’t tend to order sandwiches or drinks at an online casino, as lovely as that would be. Perhaps that’s something for a few big-name online casinos and their sister websites to look into, but until that happens, “the real thing” will always be a bigger drain on your resources. We’re not telling you to be cheap, though. Remember, while you can always earn more money, experiences are priceless. Consider carefully whether skimping on a few luxuries might afford you a more immersive and memorable holiday experience.

Now, close this article, open that suitcase, and remember: packing seventeen pairs of socks is perfectly reasonable if you’re planning on wearing three pairs a day. Have a fabulous holiday, and if any of our advice helps you, remember to send us a postcard!
