Manikarnika Tambe popularly known as Rani Lakshmi Bai was born on 19 November 1828 in Varanasi, District in Uttar Pradesh, India to Moropant Tambe and Bhagirathi Sapre. She belonged to a Hindu Brahmin Family. She lost her mother at a very young age. She was adored by her father, who was a Commander of the War under Peshwaji Rao of Bithorr District. She was been educated at home and had become more independent than others at her age.

At the age of 14, she married the Maharaja of Jhansi in the year 1842, Gangadhar Rao Newalker. After the famous Hindu goddess “Lakshmi” she was named “Rani Lakshmi Bai”. Her son Damodar Rao born in 1851 died after four months prematurely.  Gangadhar Rao then adopted his cousin’s kid and renamed him Damodar Rao who was previously named Anand Rao.

The Maharaja died in the year 1853 when she was 18 years old. Despite these tragedies, she took over all her responsibilities. After the death of his husband Gangadhar Rao, the British gave a directive to leave the kingdom and appointed her a monthly stipend of Rs 60,000.  Rani Lakshmi Bai had made up her mind not to give the British control over Jhansi.

After the death of her husband Gangadhar Rao, all the responsibilities of Jhansi come on her shoulder. She took command of the troops of men and women and organized a plan to start the war.

In the year 1858, a British commander Sir Hugh Rose declared that if Rani Lakshmi Bai refuse to leave Jhansi then he would destroy the whole city. Although this didn’t affect the bravery of Rani Lakshmi Bai and she decided to fight against them for the Independence of India.

Rani Lakshmi Bai and her troops fought till their last breath and didn’t surrender. In this revolt, she escaped from the fort along with Damodar tied to her back. She went to Kalpi which was later on attacked by the British army. After that, she went to Gwalior and fought her final battle with them.

In Gwalior, She didn’t surrender and fought till her last breath. She fought bravely alone on the battlefield. When there was no option left she decided to burn herself so that the British troops cannot capture her.
