The Best Way to Edit Image Metadata in Windows 10

Metadata

Adding, removing, or completely stripping metadata from images is something you can do, and this guide will show you how.

The file that is created when you take a photo using your phone, digital camera, or any other device includes not only the photo, but also information about the device, author, date, and other important information, which is called metadata.

Using metadata, apps such as Photos, which comes with the iPhone, can provide you with information like how large the image is, when it was captured, and what the ISO and dimensions are.

It is important to note that sometimes the information contained in the metadata is wrong or incomplete. Therefore, in order to update or remove the metadata from image, if you’re on macOS, there needs to be a dedicated Exif editor for that. However, the good news is that Windows 10 lets you edit the information or remove it completely from virtually every file type without the use of any other dedicated tool.

You can use the same steps to edit other types of files as well. In this Windows 10 guide, we show you how to edit photos’ metadata information.

How To Edit the Metadata Information in An Image File?

To edit the metadata on image files, do the following:

  • Select the file from the right-click menu, then choose Properties.
  • Click the Details tab of the image properties.

You can edit all the information in the Details tab by clicking on the value field next to each property, which is part of the metadata. Some data, on the other hand, cannot be edited.

Metadata properties for various types of files are divided into a number of sections in the Details tab.

You can edit information in the Description section by simply clicking the value field for Title, Subject, Tabs, and Comments. Clicking any of the five stars will also grant you the option to rate your image.

You can edit the Author, Date acquired, Data taken, and Copyright information in Origin.

You can then see relevant information about the image in the section devoted to Image, all of which is automatically added and cannot be modified:

  • Image ID
  • Dimensions
  • Width
  • Height
  • Horizontal resolution
  • Vertical resolution
  • Bit depth
  • Compression
  • Resolution unit
  • Color representation
  • Compressed bits/pixel

This section gives information about the camera that was used to capture the picture, including:

  • Camera maker and model
  • F-stop
  • Exposure time
  • ISO speed
  • Exposure bias
  • Focal length
  • Max aperture
  • Metering mode
  • Subject distance
  • Flash mode and energy
  • 35mm focal length

There are only a few metadata fields you can edit.

There are a number of useful fields in the Advanced Photo section that will be especially helpful to photographers. Some of the fields can only be edited, like the lens, the camera serial number, the light source, the white balance, the EXIF version, and so on.

In the File section, you will find information like the type of file, its path, its creation and modification dates, its owner, and the computer where it is located. These fields cannot be modified.

You can now close the picture properties after editing the metadata by clicking Apply and OK.

How to Remove Image Meta Data

For many people, metadata can also pose a security concern, even when it is useful. It is a blessing that you can edit metadata as well as delete in bulk certain properties that may contain personal information, such as name, location, etc.

Here are some instructions on removing your personal metadata information:

  • Click the Remove Properties and Personal Information link under the Details tab of the picture.
  • If you want all possible properties removed from this copy, select Create a copy of this file without them. Alternatively, select Remove the following properties from this file, and select what properties you want to remove.

  • Press OK to finish.
  • Finally, close the picture properties.

Conclusions

The metadata in your files helps you organize your data, although it’s often ignored. Metadata provides a better search experience on your computer, since Windows searches for this kind of information when returning a search result.

You can therefore expect more accurate results by adding more metadata information. We hope this information turned out to be helpful for you.
