A study suggests that the best way to learn about interior design is by studying great decorators of the past. The study, done in conjunction with Harvard University, was conducted over a four-year period and involved participants from all over the world. 67% of these tested agreed that learning about classic designs would be more helpful than actually practicing design.

“I always recommend it,” says Miguel Garcia, president of Interiors Unlimited Incorporated, “It’s really amazing how much you can learn just by looking at other people’s work.” He adds that many people are afraid they’ll copy something without realizing it when they look at catalogues or books full of pictures.
However, most top designers agree this fear is unsubstantiated and unfounded: “It’s a lot safer to learn from the greats than to experiment on your own,” Garcia explains. “When you’re just starting out, it’s really important to have examples of correct design.”
“I always encourage my students to look at as many pictures as they can, as often as they can,” says Dr. Janice Belair, chairwoman of Interior Design at Harvard University. She adds that people should be willing and able to see good design in all kinds of media: from catalogues and websites to movies and television shows.
For those who don’t want or aren’t able to access these things easily she suggests going into a library or bookstore. Even looking through magazines is helpful according to Ms. Belair: “Even if there are a few missteps, it’s always good for your education.”
Most top designers agree that the study is accurate and important. “I think this is very true,” says Oscar Vazquez, CEO of Rococo Designs International. ” I’ve been in the business for years and have seen a lot of people just starting out.
