Roulette is one of the most popular games in the casino. It is easy to play, attracting beginners and novices to its wheel. Yet the game is also hard to master, with plenty of rules and variations to keep seasoned professionals happy.

If you are starting or have been playing for some time, then you may have encountered a few different types. Below, we give the different types of roulette you can play online and in physical casinos.

When roulette traveled to America from Europe, it was brought by French settlers to Louisiana. Through trade routes, it then moved across the country. However, proprietors of gambling establishments were not happy with the low house advantage. To tip it in their favor, they added a second green section to the wheel, known as a double zero section.

This lowered the odds for the player, thus why many people prefer to play European versions. This can make bets more likely to happen, though the payouts are the same in both games. Online roulette is a great way to get to grips with both types as you can use bonuses provided, testing out the game without using all your bankroll. If you visit a casino in the states, then the American game is the one you will probably get presented with.

European Roulette

The history of roulette is a contested topic. Some believe that it has its roots in ancient China, deriving from the same game that also produced Mahjong. Others believe it originated with the physicist Blaise Pascal, who invented the rudimentary roulette wheel in the 17th century while trying to build a perpetual motion device. What is certain is where its popularity came from.

European roulette is understandably most popular in European casinos and online. This is because of the aforementioned single zero section, producing more favorable odds. However, there is one type that can be considered even more advantageous to the player.

French Roulette

At its core, French roulette has the same board, wheel, and rules as the European game. Yet there are two rules which make it more favorable to players.

La Partage is the first of the variations. When a zero comes up on the wheel, all even money bets then get divided between the house and the player. This reduces the house’s edge, making it much more advantageous.

The second of these rules is the En Prison rule. If the ball lands on zero and you have an even money bet, you reclaim your wager. Your stake gets left on the previous bet and declared En Prison. On the next spin, if it wins, you keep the stake plus any other bets made. If not, it is forfeited.

There are many other variations online, such as lightning roulette and spread bet. Check the rules for each game and manage your bankroll efficiently to enjoy your experience.
