The head of Russia’s Chechen Republic, Ramzan Kadyrov, claims his fighters have taken control of much of the eastern Ukrainian city of Popasna. He noted the contribution of Chechen special forces to this success.

“Chechen fighters have taken control of most of the city through intense fighting,” Ramzan Kadyrov said in a telegram, Qatar-based Al Jazeera reported on Sunday.

Ramzan Kadyrov, a self-proclaimed fighter for Russian President Vladimir Putin, said “the main roads in Popasna and the central districts have been completely evacuated.”

Popasna is located in Luhansk, in the southeastern part of Ukraine. Ramzan Kadyrov’s claim was not confirmed by Ukraine. However, Alexei Arestovich, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said on social media on Saturday that heavy fighting was taking place there.

Massive clashes between Ukrainian and Russian forces are taking place in Luhansk and Donetsk. Kiev is trying its best to control the region. There are allegations that Russian forces are targeting the homes of civilians there. Ukrainian civilians are losing their lives in their attacks.
