A two-month ceasefire has been in effect in Yemen since the start of the holy month of Ramadan. The Saudi-led military alliance and the Houthi rebels agreed to the deal, mediated by the United Nations.

The ceasefire began at 8 a.m. local time on Saturday (April 2). Under this, the warring parties will refrain from conducting all kinds of attacks and operations inside Yemen. During the two months of the ceasefire, at least 16 freight ships will have access to the port of Hodeidah, and commercial flights will operate twice a week from the capital Sanaa. Through which one can travel to Egypt and Jordan.

As a mediator, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called the ceasefire a “two-month ceasefire” between the UN-backed government, the Saudi alliance and the Houthis. I would say to everyone, play an important role in making it effective. According to the announcement, all kinds of attacks and operations will be stopped in Yemen. He said the port of Hodeidah would be opened and commercial flights would be flown. The UN Secretary General also expressed the hope that the deadly war would end with this temporary ceasefire.

Besides, the issue of prisoner exchange is still under discussion. If agreed, 18 Saudis, three Sudanese and the former president’s brother could be released.

More than a million people have been killed so far in the six-year-old deadly war in Yemen. Yemen last saw a truce in 2016.
