Triple Murder in Kushtia; Death of three, life of eight

A court has sentenced three convicts to death and seven to life imprisonment in a high-profile triple murder case in Kushtia a decade ago. At the same time, each of them was sentenced to 1 year imprisonment for non-payment of fine of Tk 25,000.

Kushtia Additional District and Sessions Judge Tajul Islam delivered the verdict on Tuesday afternoon. The verdict was announced in their absence as all the convicts were absconding.

As the allegations were not proved, 11 accused in the case were acquitted. The convicts are all active members of various banned extremist groups.

The convicts are Faruk Saddar, son of Askar Ali of Putla Danga village in Kushtia Sadar upazila, Kalu alias Kafil Uddin, son of Ishaq Ali Master of Paschim Abdalpur village in Sadar upazila and Rohan son of Kalo Majnoor of Aruapara area of ​​the municipality.

The convicts are Faruk Mandal, son of late Khorshed Mandal of Harinakundu upazila of Jhenaidah district, Liakat Ali, son of Jabed Ali of Vaina village, Liaquat Sheikh, son of Jalil Sheikh of Karimpur village of Kushtia, Monwar Sheikh, son of Achem Sheikh, Son Jamiruddin, Nural alias Nurul son of Abu Bakkar of Khordbakhail village of Islamic University Police Station, Khakchar Mandal son of Ommad Mandal of Machpara village of Sadar upazila.

According to the case sources, on the night of August 9, 2009, the terrorists beheaded three persons named Kawyum, Ayub and Shamsul of Bhabanipur in Sadar upazila and left them hanging at the front gate of Kushtia Public Works Office. Later, the police came and recovered the severed heads of the three. He then recovered the headless bodies from Sonaidanga village of Sadar upazila and identified them.

Kaiyum’s brother Abdul Hai filed a case against Kushtia Sadar Model Police Station on August 10 accusing unknown persons. After a long investigation of the case, the investigating officer of the case submitted the final report to the court accusing 22 people. After a long hearing, the verdict was announced today.

Kushtia Judge Court PP Anup Kumar Nandi said it was a notorious murder not only in Kushtia district but across the country. Extremist terrorists carry out these killings mainly for the sake of bidding and taking possession of tenders.
