Meanwhile, one lane of Chandaikona bridge of the upazila has been opened on Tuesday; There is also an announcement to open one lane of Nalka bridge over Phuljor river on April 25. Both bridges have two lanes. Two buses can travel simultaneously in one lane.

According to the Road Department’s South Asia Sub-Regional Economic Co-operation Link Road-2 (SASEC) project, one lane of the Nalka Bridge will be used by vehicles heading north from Dhaka. Vehicles heading to Dhaka from the north will have to cross the old tube bridge.

43 km from Bangabandhu West Link Road to Chandaikona Bazar. Of these, 22 km from Bangabandhu West Connection Bridge to Hatikumrul Crossroads. All vehicles in the 16 districts of the north and six districts in the south have to travel up to this 22 km, i.e. Hatikumrul intersection.

Then three highways went in three directions from the intersection. One towards Natore-Bonpara, one towards Hatikumrul-Bogra and the other towards Hatikumrul-Pabna. As a result, the most pressure was on the 22 km road from Bangabandhu West Connection Bridge to Hatikumrul Crossroads.
According to the Roads Department, the road has already been widened by throwing bricks and mud at Kadda Mor, Panchliar Bazar, Hatikumrul Chowrasta and Chandaikona Bazar areas ahead of Eid.

Apart from this, the renovation work of the risky places of Elenga-Rangpur highway under construction is also nearing completion.

Project Director of South Asia Sub-Regional Economic Co-operation (SASEC) Link Road-2 Project Waliur Rahman and other officials visited the 43 km highway area from Bangabandhu Bridge West Link to Chandaikona on Tuesday.

Waliur Rahman, director of the Sasek-2 project, said that the long traffic congestion caused by the pressure of homebound people on the Bangabandhu Bridge Link Highway during Eid Yatra reaches its climax every year. Officials of the Roads and Highways Department have been instructed to stay on the road by canceling their leave to reduce the misery during the Eid procession.
The project director said the old tube bridge could not carry more than two vehicles at a time.

The project director called for stopping car parking and driving in lanes to avoid traffic jams on the highways, but said the pressure could increase this time even though the number of homebound people has been slightly lower in the last two years due to the Kovid epidemic.

“After two years, people are now getting the opportunity to celebrate Eid with their families. Therefore, the traffic on the highway will be higher than at any time in the past.
Apart from this, importance has also been given to keep the side roads active, he said, adding that the roads in Hatikumrul Roundabout area have been widened to 26 feet.

Waliur Rahman further said that work is underway to upgrade the 190 km highway from Elenga to Rangpur in four lanes under Sasek-2 project. However, the project duration has been extended due to work stoppage and stagnation due to the epidemic.

“The project has not been completed in three years due to coronavirus, so the time has been extended for another year.”

Also present during the visit were TM Nur-e-Alam Siddiqui, Supervising Engineer, Roads and Highways Department, Golam Mortuza, Additional Project Director, Sasek-2 Project, Joy Prakash Chowdhury, Additional Project Director, Abdul Hamid, Project Manager, Mahbubur. Rahman, Sirajganj Roads and Highways Department Executive Engineer Didarul Alam Tarafdar.

Calling on the drivers to be patient while driving on the highway for one year due to the increase in time, the officials said that there is no problem in the rest of the highway under construction to the north except Sirajganj.
800 and a half members of highway and district police will be on the ground to ensure safe journey of homebound people on Eid. This work will start from 26th April.

Hatikumrul Highway Police Station OC Lutfar Rahman said, “From April 26, more than 300 highway police will be on duty to ensure the safety of the highways.”

Sirajganj Superintendent of Police Hasibul Alam said 24-hour security would be provided on the highway. More than four and a half hundred policemen will be divided into three divisions and will work for eight hours in a group of 150 people.

Besides, the police will also play an active role in bringing the situation under control in case of any accident, said the Superintendent of Police.
