As a student, it is always so heartbreaking when summer time has to come to an end, however parents can help their kids to get excited for the upcoming school year. Summer usually brings about lots of relaxing, slow paced, and fun activities without rigid schedules. Change can be difficult for some children, so transitioning back to the structured school day routine can be stressful and sometimes seems like a really big shift. There are many things you can do as a parent to help your children to mentally and physically prepare to be in a routine again.

Start Slow
Start a few weeks before school actually starts with loose schedules of un-intimidating tasks. This will help your kids start to feel in a routine again without causing them the stress of sticking to a demanding schedule right off the bat. This can help them ease back into the swing of things before busy schedules begin to take over. You can start off by giving them a few tasks to finish each day such as:
Set wake up times
Doing chores
Helping out with preparing family meals
Feeding the family pets
Scheduled night time routine to help with getting to bed on time
Let them plan out the calendar for the upcoming week activities
These are low stress tasks, so if they do not end up getting accomplished on time, or some things slip through the cracks, you do not need to worry too much, just work harder the next day to pay attention to the clock. Remember, if you stress, your kids will notice and start to stress as well. Let this be fun for them.

Go Shopping With Them
Thinking about the first day back to school can be exciting! Everyone gets to see the friends and classmates they haven’t seen all summer. They get to show off their new backpacks and shoes. You can get them excited by letting them pick out a new outfit or new backpack for their first day of school. Who doesn’t get excited about new clothes? Let them think about their outfit and let them plan it. Giving them autonomy will be sure to help them feel in control. You can even have them plan out their first day of school lunch and meal prep by having them help you shop for the food items that you need.

Back To School Survival Kit

If you have recently moved and your kids are starting at a new school, if your kids tend to be anxious about the first day, or your kids just love school, you can even do a mock first day of school with them. Many elementary school students love to play “house” or “school”, why not play with them? You can pretend you are the teacher and can give some fun pretend assignments to them. Modeling how the first day can go for them will help ease some anxiety so they can know what to anticipate. Here are some example back to school survival kit worksheets that you can print out. These are mostly “get to know you” worksheets that they can color and draw on. This will get your kids back in the mindset of doing assignments and using a pencil again!

Remember, if you are anxious about the first day, your kids will notice and be anxious too. Your attitude is contagious, so be as positive about going back to school as you can be, and the excited attitude will rub off. It will be a great year!
