While some internet users discuss more practical philosophy-related topics such as the ways in which the internet impacts different segments of our society such as teenagers and adolescents, other people spend their time discussing more practical things such as the different internet services such as Xfinity Internet in the market. Yet another section of the population likes to engage in more semantic discussions such as the relationship between a certain term related to the internet with another. In the case that you are more of a person that discusses the semantics related to the internet, know that you have come to the perfect place! We say this with so much surety because, in this piece, we will be discussing the way in which the term “network” relates to the term “internet.”

When discussing how something relates to another, we need to fully explore not only the definition but also the boundaries of the two terms. In a way, we need to explore exactly what the two terms are. And this is exactly how we are going to be going with this article. We will first define the term internet and then we will proceed to define the term “network”

The Internet

World Wide Web

The World Wide Web is the application of the internet that consists of billions of web pages connected to another through a code invented by Sir Tim-Berners Lee in the late 1980s. This code is called by the name of HTML. The World Wide Web can be accessed through browsers such as Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. And yes; if you were wondering whether the www at the start of each URL on the browser stands for the phenomenon being discussed in this section, you are correct. The web pages on the World Wide Web can be divided into three parts:

  • Surface web: consists of all the web pages that you can access freely and can be indexed on search engines.
  • Deep web: is the largest part of the World Wide Web. It consists of pages that cannot be accessed easily and cannot be indexed on search engines such as Google.
  • Dark web: is the part of the web that has pages that have the most secret material. In fact, the dark web is often used for criminal activity.

Online Apps

Apart from the World Wide Web, you can take advantage of the internet by using a wide variety of online apps. These apps include a wide variety of gaming apps such as 8-Ball Pool and Valorant. Alongside, they can also include weather apps such as AccuWeather.

Communications Tools

There are a wide variety of communications tools available in the world. These tools can be in the form of the intranets of large organizations such as universities and government and non-governmental organizations.

Network

A network is defined as a connection that enables the sharing and transfer of data and information between multiple computing devices. By computing devices, we mean any device that is able to run a program. That means that computing devices can be categorized as a lot more than conventional personal computers. They can also be smartphones, smartwatches, and all sorts of other gadgets.

The Internet Is A Network!

From the above definition of the term network, it is easy to see that the internet is a network in itself. After all, it connects not two but 35 billion computing devices with one another! We did not pull this figure out of thin air but are actually referring to figures from Statista – a statistics reporting organization that has been operating for well over ten years now. Considering how the internet connects computers over long distances (even to the International Space Station), we can conclude that the internet is a Wide Area Network.

Conclusion

For now, this is it.  We hope this article has helped you get a clearer picture of the global phenomenon called the internet.
