Newman Dismisses Casten Attacks As ‘Poop’ In TV Ad Featuring Her Dog In a new TV spot featuring her dog copping a squat, Marie Newman dismisses Sean Casten’s attacks as “sh*t” in IL-06 Democratic Primary.
IL-06 — The sh*t is flying – both literally and figuratively — in the heated Democratic primary where two incumbent congresspeople — Sean Casten and Marie Newman – are battling it out to retain their seat in the remapped 6th Congressional District.
Newman’s cable TV spot — titled “Sh*t” — debuted Wednesday on cable TV. It slams attacks from Casten, whom she claims is using money from the SuperPac Democratic Majority for Israel for a major ad buy “to erase a lifelong Democrat and progressive woman from Congress.”
The ad features Newman walking her beagle, Iggy, who assumes the squatting position familiar to any dog owner, introducing herself and warning voters that “unfortunately, you’re going to be hearing a lot of sh*t about me from my opponent Sean Casten.” Newman goes to dismiss Casten’s “false attacks” from her opponent’s “dark money allies.”
“So here’s the truth: I grew up here, and have been a lifelong progressive Democrat. Casten voted for anti-choice Republicans like George Bush,” Newman says in the ad. “I’ve always fought to protect reproductive rights, an economy for all, and universal health care. Sean Casten hasn’t. I don’t accept corporate money, while Casten has taken a million dollars from corporate PACs.”

When Iggy finishes relieving himself, the commercial is careful to show Newman picking up her dog’s lawn deposit and tossing it into a garbage can conveniently placed curbside, while touting the differences between herself and Casten.
Despite Newman’s own ethics probe — allegations that she offered a job on her staff to a potential opponent in exchange for him to staying out of the 2020 primary are currently under review by the House Ethics Committee — it’s a pretty gutsy ad.
The Newman ad also accuses Casten, who moved into the Downers Grove area a decade ago, of buying his way into Congress by accepting nearly $1 million in corporate contributions and relaying on SuperPACs spending six figures to attack his female opponents.
Recently, a complaint was filed against Casten with the FEC, alleging that Casten’s campaign committee in 2018 colluded with a super PAC funded by his wealthy father in airing $130,000 worth of ads attacking a Casten primary rival Kelly Mazeski, as reported by Greg Hinz in Crain’s Chicago Business.
“Casten at the time strongly denied there was any coordination between his campaign and the super PAC funded by his father,” Crain’s stated.
Casten’s campaign has dismissed the FEC complaint, filed by a former district resident, as “baseless.”
Watch for TV and radio ads to start ratcheting up between these two candidates in the final weeks leading up to the IL-06 Democratic primary on June 28.
