There is a saying that there is a woman behind every successful man.

However, the recent success of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in important Assembly elections in several Indian states is believed to have been contributed by millions of women.

Assembly elections were held in five Indian states in February-March. The BJP won in four of the five states. According to two recent polls, the BJP has received more votes from women voters than men in these four states. Among the four states is Uttar Pradesh, which has a larger population than Brazil.

Now the BBC’s Geeta Pandey is trying to find out why Indian women are more inclined to vote for Modi’s party, the BJP.

The Election Commission of India has been determining the voter turnout in Lingved since 1982. From then on, a special trend can be noticed for a long time. And that is that women voters are voting more for Congress in the national elections.

However, in 2019, a different picture can be seen. That same year, the BJP got the highest number of women’s votes. However, now, like most political parties in India, women are under-represented in the BJP. Even BJP leaders are often seen making headlines for making misogynistic statements.

Apart from that, the party has also come under severe criticism at home and abroad for failing to handle rape cases in some BJP-ruled states.

Women have been seen leading the country’s long-running protests over the Modi government’s controversial citizenship law. Despite all this, more women in India are now voting for the BJP than ever before. At least that’s what the statistics say.

How the BJP became the party of choice for women

Sanjay Kumar, a researcher at the Center for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), a Delhi-based think tank, believes Modi is at the heart of the BJP’s desire to become the preferred party of Indian women.

Sanjay Kumar said the BJP’s appeal to women voters was not made in a hurry. Here Modi has certainly acted as an influencer. He has acted as a big influencer.

Political scientist and author Nalin Mehta has researched this issue while writing her recent book ‘The New BJP’. According to her research, the BJP formed the women’s wing of the party in 1980. Then the team started reaching out to the women.

Mehta said there were some important and influential women leaders in the BJP at that time. The team makes significant commitments, especially on women’s issues. But even then, for decades, many women voters did not vote for the BJP. The BJP was widely seen as the dominant party with a patriarchal mentality. As a result, the party had little appeal to women.

In 2019, the BJP saw a major change at the national level in terms of gaining the support of women voters. Mehta went back to 2006 to talk about this. In 2006, Modi was re-elected as the Chief Minister of the western Indian state of Gujarat. Mehta thinks that Modi was able to attract the attention of women voters at that time.

At election rallies, Modi often talked about his 56-inch-wide chest. In the Hindi-speaking states of India, powerful men use such words to express their strength. Modi uses this word in politics.

Mehta said that whenever Modi used to say this, audible voices could be heard from the audience. This word came from the row in which women voters used to sit. His gatherings were often attended by more women than men. He used to say to women, ‘I am your brother, your son. Vote for me. I will look after your demands. ‘

Modi’s strategy

Masculinity has its limitations. Modi took cognizance of this issue. She took developmental strategies along with women-centric propaganda with the image of ‘Alpha’ men. His strategy works. He was also elected Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2008 after 2012.
Modi’s party, the BJP, won a landslide victory in the 2014 national elections. He became the Prime Minister. At this time Modi used his strategy more effectively.
In his first address to the nation as Prime Minister, Modi spoke out against female feticide. Called for an end to female feticide. Modi strongly condemned the rape. He advised the parents to make the child a good person.

According to Mehta, Modi as the Prime Minister became the catalyst for change. From 2014 to 2019, she regularly spoke on women’s issues in various meetings and rallies. In addition to harnessing personal charisma, she increased women’s participation in the team.
