One of the topics I have been writing about for many years is the ‘integrated admission’ examination system of public universities. In order to alleviate the suffering of the students and parents, we have repeatedly tried to bring to the fore the issue which was the demand of the time.
As a result, under the direction of the President of the University, first the agricultural universities of the country and later in the academic year 2020-21, 20 public universities conducted cluster admission tests in the form of integrated admission tests. However, ignoring the President’s instructions, Dhaka, Rajshahi, Jahangirnagar, Chittagong University and Engineering Universities continued the admission test according to the old rules. However, in order to alleviate the suffering of the students, for the first time last year, 20 universities have failed by organizing cluster-based admission tests. The admission committee of our university has thrown this ‘precious’ cluster admission test into some controversy due to various complications. As a result, there is a kind of wrong message in the minds of students and parents about integrated admission test. Although we have partially accepted the proposals we have made in the press at various times, the students’ suffering has been exacerbated by the short-sightedness of the universities in terms of implementation, which was not at all desirable. Even if the University Grants Commission (UGC) could implement the proposals made to the universities, they would not have to face such problems.
If this confusion of cluster-based admission tests is not removed, there may be some confusion about this test in the future. Therefore, it is necessary to radically revise the structure of the current admission process of the university in order to create favorable conditions for integrated or cluster admission tests.
According to the notification of cluster based admission test, students will participate in (only) admission test according to their HSC or equivalent examination branch (Science, Humanities, Commerce). And for the admission test, you have to apply in two stages – preliminary application and those selected in the preliminary process can apply for the final. The notification for the academic year 2020-21 states that in this initial application of Rs. Students of C (Commerce) unit can apply if they have GPA-6.50. Later the students will be selected according to the criteria of that category.
After the preliminary selection, in order to take part in the main admission test in 28 admission centers, the students had to fall into the trap of center selection again. There, students are given 100 marks in SSC or equivalent and HSC or equivalent examinations based on the position of the educational institution, GPA, year of pass, boy or girl. The center is determined based on the preference order of the candidates’ test center and this number.
Apart from this, according to the merit score obtained in the main examination, the students can be admitted subject to fulfilling the conditions imposed by the concerned university.
University teachers and students say in the media that the 20 universities in the batch-based admission test are struggling to meet the requirements of their respective universities and are also suffering financial losses. Universities are raising GPA again after fulfilling the conditions of SSC and HSC GPA basic admission test. As a result, any student who is ahead with merit score is not getting any benefit even after fulfilling the minimum condition of GPA. As a result, they are no longer able to get admission in cluster universities.
