The Legend of the Irish Claddagh

The beautiful Claddagh motif has been incorporated into Irish jewelry since its’ creation over 400 years ago.  The Claddagh is said to have originated in the 17th century.

Many stories and fables are linked to the Claddagh, but most believe it was created by a man named Richard Joyce.  Joyce was a sailor from the village of Claddagh in County Galway.  He was captured by Algerian pirates and sold to a Moorish goldsmith, where he was held captive for 14 years.  During these years of enslavement, Joyce learned the craft of jewelry making.  He created the first ever Claddagh ring to express his everlasting love and devotion for his soul mate.  Joyce was freed in 1689 and returned home to his sweetheart.  He gave her the Claddagh ring declaring: ‘With these hands, I give you my heart, and I crown it with my love.’

Another legend about the origin of the Claddagh ring is linked to a lady named Margaret Joyce.  Margaret was from County Galway and was married to a wealthy Spanish merchant.  After her husband died, Margaret returned to her native Galway and used her riches to build bridges.   The fable says that an eagle released the original Claddagh ring onto her lap in recognition of her kind deed.

Whatever the origins of the Claddagh, it is undoubtedly a unique and meaningful part of Irish history and culture.
