Former security chief John Lee-ka-chu has been elected Hong Kong’s next leader. His election is being seen globally as a step towards consolidating the Chinese administration’s dominance over Hong Kong.

John Lee is known for his radical views in Beijing. He was elected Sunday, local time.

He replaces Carrie Lam.

A recent survey found that Hong Kong residents do not like John Lee Ka-chiu very much. He got only 34.6 points out of 100 in the popularity survey.

However, such a survey is not important in Hong Kong. Because the people here cannot elect their own leader. The 74-year-old leader was selected by a selection committee. Most of them are made up of Beijing loyalists.

John Lee got 1,418 out of 1,500 votes. For the first time, a security official has been elected to the top post in Hong Kong.
