Satyajit Ray’s ‘Rivals’ Satyajit Ray’s ‘Rivals’
has been selected in the Cannes Classics, the classical branch of the Cannes Festival. The film has been digitized after being recovered as part of the National Film Heritage Mission project under the auspices of India’s Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The original 35 mm sound negative was provided by the film’s producer Purnima Dutta. The Bengali film ‘Pratidwandbi’ based on Sunil Gangopadhyay’s novel was released in 1970. This is the first film in Satyajit Ray’s Kolkata trilogy. It stars Dhritiman Chattopadhyay and Jayshree Roy.
Malayalam film ‘Thampu’
has also been selected in Cannes Classics. He died in 1991. His picture has been restored by film activist Shivendra Singh Dungarpur-based Film Heritage Foundation. The arrival of a circus troupe in a village in Kerala has changed the lives of the locals, highlighting the lack of humanitarian ties and marginalized people.
Legendary Indian actor Amitabh Bachchan wrote on social media, ‘I am very proud to hear that Govinda Arvind’s’ Thumpu’, restored by the Film Heritage Foundation, has been selected for the Cannes Festival. This is a great milestone in the journey of preserving the Indian film tradition.
The 90-minute Hindi documentary
‘All That Bridges’ directed by Shaunak Sen, a young man from Delhi, India, will be screened at the special screening. Its content is the love of birds of two brothers Mohammad Saud and Nadeem Shehzad. The number of injured birds has risen alarmingly due to Delhi’s polluted environment. After rescuing the injured birds, they provide treatment and care. ‘All That Bridges’ won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Usbe World Cinema Documentary Competition last January. This is Shaunak Sen’s second construction. Her first documentary, ‘Cities of Sleep’ (2016), was about homeless scouts searching for a place to sleep in Delhi.
Country of Honor in the film Marche du
India is the ‘Country of Honor’ this year in the film Marche du Commercial Branch of Cannes. Organizers are paying tribute to the 75th anniversary of India’s independence, the 75th anniversary of the country’s diplomatic relations with France, and the 65th anniversary of the Cannes Convention. This is the first honor for any country. In the spotlight of the upcoming events, different countries will be specially focused.
Organized by the Central Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on May 19. The inaugural exhibition of Madhavan directed film ‘Rocketry: The Number Effect’ will be held at the Pale de Festival building, the heart of Cannes festival. It is based on the life of Nambi Narayanan, a former scientist at the Indian Space Research Organization, who was accused of spying.
India will have the opportunity to highlight the potential of the five films selected in the Goes to Can section. These are part of the work-in-progress lab in the film market. These include ‘Bagjan’ (Assamese), ‘Bailadila’ (Hindi), Ek Jagah Aapni (Hindi), Flower (Marathi, Kannada, Hindi) and ‘Shivamma’ (Kannada). An auditorium called Olympia Screen will be set up on May 22 for the screening of these films.
Indian Pavilion
The Indian Pavilion will be inaugurated on the morning of 16th May at Kansaik. It will feature films of the country’s linguistic, cultural and regional diversity. The pavilion will serve as a networking platform for professional filmmakers from around the world. Its goal is to establish international partnerships in shooting, distribution, production, script production, film sales, syndication and technology. Besides, the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has planned to present India as the world’s content hub in an hour-long conference at the India Forum during the festival.
On the banks of the river Brahmaputra
The Assamese language film ‘Bumba Ride’ directed by Biswajit Bora will be screened on May 22 in the film Marshe du. He is a resident of Golaghat in Assam. The filmmaker shot the entire film in Assam on the banks of the Brahmaputra River. He spent his childhood and adolescence there. The main character of the film is 9 year old Bumba. The character is played by a boy from a village in Assam. His name is Indrajith Pegu. She wants to go to English medium school in the story. But he has to study in government school. Producer Louit Kumar Barman has announced that if Indrajith Pegu wants to study in English medium, he will have to pay for his education up to 10th standard. He hopes that the boy will be a great actor when he is well cared for.
The trailer of Kamal Hasan’s new movie ‘Bikram’ will be unveiled on May 16 in the movie Marshe du. Directed by Lokesh Kanagraj, it also stars Vijay Setupati and Fahad Fasil. Chandrakant Singh’s short film ‘Parachaiya’, made in honor of renowned lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi, will also be screened at Marshe du Film.

festival was held in 1948. The festival is usually held in May of each year. Cannes is one of the three most important film festivals in Europe. The other two in the Big Three are the Berlin International Film Festival in Germany and the Venice Film Festival in Italy.
