Introduction:

Owners of the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 may now access the most intriguing features of their smartwatches with today’s watchOS 10.1 update. Double Tap involves tapping one’s thumb and index finger together twice for gesture-based interactions. It’s a novel and clever way to use the wearable when you have a full hand. It was unquestionably the high point of a line upgrade that was otherwise modest.

During my Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 test period, I had a few days to test out a beta version of the functionality, and I can confirm that it functions primarily as promised (I wear my watch reasonably high on my wrist, but it worked perfectly after making a slight adjustment). This month, the capability was first made available to beta testers; anyone with the necessary devices can now access it.

Interestingly, AssistiveTouch, an accessibility tool that Apple Watch users have accessed for a while, is the foundation for this capability. Without a doubt, the updated edition offers unique accessibility features. The Neural Engine of the S9 chip was updated to enable Double Tap in its current state.

The functionality may be used for various functions, including scrolling through your Smart Stack of notifications, pausing and starting timers or stopwatches, setting alarms to wake you up, playing and pausing music, and turning on and off the flashlight.

From Apple, here is the complete list:

  • Navigating through the Smart Stack’s widgets by opening it from any watch face.
  • Returning and initiating calls.
  • Message sending, dictation answering, swiping through lengthy alerts with a second double tap, and viewing messages from notifications.
  • We are starting, stopping, and restarting a timer.
  • Putting a stopwatch to sleep and back on.
  •  Setting a false alert.
  • We are launching and stopping podcasts, audiobooks, and music.
  •  Using the Compass app and switching to the new Elevation view.
  • Using the Camera Remote in the Camera app to snap an image with an iPhone.
  • We are activating or deactivating the workout alerts automatically.
  • Responding to messages received through messaging apps and ignoring reminders, even those from outside sources, are examples of the main actions that can be taken in response to notifications.

The app prioritizes the action the Watch determines most pertinent to your current interaction with the device. For instance, when there’s an incoming call, it will be given priority over any other ongoing tasks. However, currently, there is no API for the feature. Therefore, third-party app usage is restricted. Accessories can also enhance your experience with your Apple Watch.
