There were fifty tests played between the Indian cricket team and the Australian cricket team between 1947 and 1996. As a tribute to cricket legends, Sunil Gavaskar of India and Allan Border, the former captain of Australia, the storied competition was renamed the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 1996. ● First Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia
During the 1999/2000 cricket season, Sachin Tendulkar captained the Indian cricket team and presided over three Test matches in India’s Border-Gavaskar series.
Indian cricket has a poor track record in Australia, losing 16 of their previous 25 Test matches there during six tours spanning five years. Australia swept India in all three tests that were played between the two countries. Adelaide, Melbourne, and the Sydney Cricket Ground all played host to wins. The epic Australia tour of India, 2001
The 2001 series is widely regarded as one of the most successful in the format’s history. Australia’s record-winning streak of 16 consecutive tests was snapped by the Indian cricket team, led by captain Sourav Ganguly, in the same series.
Australia took game one of the series in Mumbai, but India came back to take the series victory by a 2-1 count. Harbhajan Singh’s hat trick, VVS Laxman’s stubborn 281, and Rahul Dravid’s contribution in an astounding 376-run partnership helped India win the Test series in Chennai. India’s confidence was greatly bolstered by their triumph in the second Test match at Eden Gardens, and they went on to win the Test series in Chennai.
● India retain Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia–
Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble, two of the finest Indian cricket players of all time, put their mark on the 2008 series. Both athletes completed their careers by playing for India in their final match ever. Indian cricket team destroyed its Australian counterparts in a home Test series, 4-0.
The 2010 Test match at Mohali between India and Australia was the most fruitful of the two Tests played in India at the time. The home team lost eight wickets in a row while trying to score 216 runs in their fourth innings of the first test. India needed 92 more runs to win, but Ishant Sharma and VVS Laxman shared an 81-run stand for the ninth wicket, setting a new record in the process. Soon after, India won a thrilling match by one wicket thanks to the efforts of Pragyan Ojha and VVS Laxman, cementing their place in sports history as the authors of one of the most remarkable comebacks ever.
● The ugly side of India vs Australia
Hosts Australia swept India 4-0 in 2011–12 series for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. After scoring 626 runs across four games at an average of 125.20, Australia’s skipper Michael Clarke was named the series’ most valuable player. Clarke set a new personal record of 329 runs batted in without being out in game two of the series.
India got their own back on Australia in 2013 by sweeping them 4-0 at the Border-Gavaskar Trophy tournament in India. As an intriguing side note, MS Dhoni scored 224 runs in the first Test played in Chennai, breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the greatest score by an Indian Test captain.
● A cricket squad from India with a reputation for tenacity and dedication to the game, who also happen to be in the lead at the moment –
When former Australia batsman Phillip Hughes was struck by a short-pitched delivery during a Sheffield Shield match between South Australia and New South Wales this year, it was a devastating and unexpected end to his life. After the third and final test match ended in December, MS Dhoni shocked everyone by announcing his retirement from test cricket. As of now, Virat Kohli is leading the Indian Test squad as captain.
● India scripts memories at home
In 2020-21, India overcame a 3-0 deficit to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, resulting in a tremendous sporting epic.
Despite the absence of several key players, including skipper Virat Kohli, who was sidelined with injury, India was able to win the Test series and retain the prestigious Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
The Indian cricket team, captained by Ajinkya Rahane, won the four-game series 2-1 after defeating the Australian cricket team by three wickets in the fourth Test, which was played in Brisbane. During the series, Rahane led his squad as captain.
