Well, it seems it’s not as complicated as it seems. To offer the possibility of issuing a Visa debit card to users, Cash App partnered with Sutton Bank, a licensed bank that’s capable of issuing debit cards to customers. Summarily, all the Cash App cards out there are from Sutton Bank, which is a smart move that many payment apps use.

However, the card isn’t the only positive result of the collaboration between Cash App and Sutton Bank. Since Cash App already has the backing of a full-blown bank at this point, it’s capable of integrating a couple of features that are traditionally associated with banks.

One of the features the preceding paragraph is referring to is a direct deposit. As the preceding paragraph implies, you’ll need a Cash App card to be able to use the direct deposit feature, as that’s when your account will be officially linked to a bank account from Sutton Bank.

How to Set Up Direct Deposit on Cash App

The direct deposit feature isn’t enabled by default on Cash App; you have to meet the requirements and enable it before you can start using it. Here are the steps required to set up the direct deposit feature on Cash App.

  • Get a Cash App Card

As explained earlier, Cash App won’t let you receive direct deposits on the app if you don’t have a Cash App card. Since the card is available for free to all verified accounts, there’s no real reason why you shouldn’t have a Cash App card with your account.

You can order a Cash Card by heading over to the card tab on Cash App’s homepage and selecting the “Get Cash Card” option. Follow the steps that appear afterward and you should have a card shipped to you in no time if you have a verified account. 

  • Enable the Direct Deposit Feature

Once you have a verified Cash App account and a Cash App card, you automatically qualify to get direct deposits using the app. However, you still have to enable it from inside the app by getting your account and routing number for the deposits.

To enable the feature, head over to the Cash Card tab from the app’s home screen at the bottom left and select the Cash option just above Bitcoin. On the resulting page, scroll down until you see the Get Account Number option; tap on it to continue.

If this is the first time you’re trying to get the account number, you’ll see a screen promoting the direct deposit account, with a button that lets you enable the account below. Tap on the Enable Account button and you’ll get a button that lets you copy the account details.

  • Send the Routing Number to Your Employer

After copying the details, you can paste them into a message to your employer to let them deposit payments directly into the account. As soon as they pay in there, you’ll receive an equivalent of the amount in your Cash App balance directly.

In some cases, there might be errors when someone makes a direct deposit to your account, but you didn’t receive it. The following section will detail what to do in such a scenario.

If the sender is trying to make a direct deposit exceeding $10,000, it will fail, but not instantly. Cash App doesn’t support transfers exceeding $10,000 per day, either lump sum or as separate transfers. When a payment fails on Cash App, it doesn’t return to the sender instantly. Instead, it might take up to 10 days for the sender to receive the money, so you may want to keep that in mind.
