St. Nicholas sold everything he owned, including money, to the poor people in his neighbourhood. He dedicated his entire life to helping and caring for sick and suffering people. Many European countries begin celebrating St. Nicholas Day on the eve of December 5th by exchanging candy, chocolate notes, modest gifts, and puzzles. 

Children leave carrots and hay in their shoes in the hopes that St. Nicholas will swap them for modest gifts and treats. This day is widely observed in many tiny Russian and Greek towns and villages.

St. Lucia, also known as the Festival of Light, is predominantly celebrated in Sweden, Norway, and the Swedish-speaking parts of Finland. After being accused of surreptitiously delivering food to Christians hiding in the mazes of underground catacombs beneath Rome, she was killed.

During the day, families celebrate St. Lucia’s Day by dressing their eldest daughter in white and providing coffee and baked goodies, such as saffron bread (lussekatter) and ginger biscuits, to other family members and visitors.
