In the 21st century, environmental issues are impossible to ignore. Though human development has reached far-ranging and unlikely places, proving our ingenuity and willingness to thrive amidst a wide range of environments, our continual expansion has come at enormous costs. These costs include, though are not limited to, the widespread pollution of air and water, the scarcity of potable water, and the mass extinction of species.

One of the foremost contributors to these environmental issues is the construction industry, currently valued at eleven trillion dollars worldwide. With the way the construction industry typically operates, buildings are not designed to last for very long. Shopping malls and many similar buildings have been notoriously short-lived in their utility. On the other hand, construction projects often have long-term consequences for their surrounding environments as well as for the world at large.

The methods employed by the construction industry are not only harmful to the natural environment, they are harmful to the constructions themselves. As the populations of various species dwindle and disappear, natural environments are destabilized. This has the unfortunate effect of abetting natural disasters as they occur, thereby causing an increase of property damage in developed areas.

Numerous entrepreneurs have sought solutions to these relevant issues. Boxabl, an architecture/technology startup that was launched in 2017, has been the most ambitious and successful in creating sustainable housing that is readily affordable to a wide range of people. “Boxabl’s units are foldable,” says a spokesperson for the company. “They can condense into compact form for shipment and unfold on a lot in under an hour. This innovation makes transportation efficient, cost-effective, and less environmentally taxing than all other operations in the industry.”

Boxabl’s sense for economy is particularly evident in the Casita. A 375 ft2 studio apartment configuration, the factory-built Casita features a full kitchen and bath and is well-equipped with appliances and other modern conveniences. The product’s compactness will lead to reduced energy consumption among Casita owners. This built-in sustainability is most likely why Tesla CEO Elon Musk purchased a Casita, a fact that Musk has recently confirmed. There is evidently a market for the Boxabl product, as is indicated by the Casita’s 110,000 customer long waitlist.

“The Casita is the culmination of the desire of our engineers to solve three key problems,” says company co-founder Galiano Tiramani. “First, how to bring down housing prices, which are far too expensive for millions of would-be homeowners to afford. Second, how to lessen the environmental impact we all have on this planet. And third, how to help people impacted by natural disasters to be rehoused quickly in homes that are safe and sustainable.”

As environmental conditions continue to deteriorate, and natural disasters are made more catastrophic as a result, millions of people may potentially lose their homes and livelihoods to natural disasters in the coming years. With the advent of Boxabl’s Casita, however, victims of natural disasters are more likely to find safe and accommodating shelters in the aftermath.

“How many times have we seen people be displaced by floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, and tornadoes?” company co-founder Paolo Tiramani asks. “There is always the need for a rapid response in these emergencies so that people can have safe shelter again. The Casita, which can be unpacked in only an hour and can come fully stocked, will be the perfect solution for these situations.”

As Boxabl homes become more commonplace and replace traditional homes, the construction industry can be expected to have less deleterious effects on the natural environment. The company expects to bring about a major shift in the way that houses are both constructed and conceived of. Boxabl also intends to become the major player in the world’s eleven trillion dollar construction industry.
