During its long history, mankind has created various types and forms of musical art. Each era gave rise to its own genres and styles of music, sometimes wholly new and unusual. Society was updated, and new varieties of music appeared, to match their time. Now you can submit your music to platforms in every county where the music culture is prevalent. The Story of Modern Music
In the middle of the 20th century, a technical revolution took place in the musical field in the USA, Great Britain, and other countries close to them. The invention of the electric guitar, electronic keyboards, and other instruments, the introduction of devices that amplify and change their sound, and the emergence of other electronic musical equipment created unprecedented opportunities for musicians to create. On this new technical basis, thanks to the efforts of young talents, rock music, and many other new musical art genres and styles arose. As a result of globalization processes, these genres, and styles have become widespread and very popular almost all over the world.
The author proposes to call the whole set of these musical genres and styles that appeared of in the second half of the 20th century global contemporary popular music. This name is new, but, probably, only in part, because earlier in the musical literature concepts close to it were used, in the same or, in any case, in similar meanings. So, such of them “popular music”, “modern popular music”, and “contemporary music” were very common. It seems, however, that the name proposed by the author will be the most accurate for designating the set of musical genres and styles considered in the book.
What is Global Popular Music?
What is global contemporary popular music? The answer to this question may seem quite obvious to some, and the author himself has already partly touched upon it in the introduction. But still, it requires complete certainty, since this determines the establishment of a specific list of genres and styles that should be attributed to this area of music, and, consequently, the circle of its performers, the success of which the author will determine in this book.
Indeed, doubts may arise whether any music created or performed by modern musicians can be called modern. And if only those of its varieties have arisen in the modern era, then what are its boundaries? One can also doubt the meaning of the term “global”. It is also not entirely clear what kind of music can be called “popular” and how to distinguish it from “unpopular”.
Limits of Musical Art.
Finally, the limits of musical art are not really so obvious either. For example, works of almost all varieties of such a popular trend in recent years as hip-hop, which belongs to show business in the field of music, have almost no melody, and their rhythm is monotonous up to primitivism. In fact, many of these compositions are nothing more than a rhythmic recitation of specific verses (rap) to the beat of an electronic “drum”. And some types of extreme “metal” are perceived by an inexperienced viewer as a cacophony. Almost the same can be said about certain areas of electronic music, for example, ambient, and even more so about noise. What are some of them? A set of various kinds of noise, sometimes not only without a melody but also without a rhythm. Of course, the author does not claim to have an irreproachable definition of the concept under consideration, much less its complete theoretical justification. It is also not of decisive importance to attempt to express this definition in the form of a single verbal construction, although it will not be superfluous either. In order to achieve greater accuracy and clarity, the author will, first of all, define it specifically and thoroughly, in order, through a detailed disclosure of the meaning of the words expressing it and by establishing its features.
So, the concept of music in the context of the questions posed here would be correct to consider quite broadly, because, firstly, there are no clear and indisputable boundaries of musical art, as well as prohibitions on referring certain phenomena to it. Secondly, there is no obvious point in ignoring the actually existing circumstances of the wide perception of the concept of music in society. Thirdly, these controversial phenomena are sound works, which are primarily characteristic of music. Fourthly, the sounds of these works are structured and generally likened to traditional music. Fifth, such phenomena are intended for the same purposes in the main as traditional music.
