The main opposition party Samajwadi Jana Balabouigeya (SGB) has decided to take charge of the government after Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. However, they have given conditions for this. That is, Mahinda’s younger brother Gotabaya Rajapaksa will have to step down as president.
This was reported in a report in the Sri Lankan-based Daily Mirror on Tuesday (May 10). SGB MP Harsana Razakaruna said the SGB had decided to take power if the president relinquished power to Rajapaksa. Most of the members of their party have proposed this.
Harsana Razakaruna said the SGB had also held meetings with other political parties. Apart from the independent parties, the party members also held meetings with former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Meanwhile, SGB leader Sajith Premadasa said in a tweet that his party was ready to take on any responsibility in Sri Lanka. However, they are not willing to be involved in any work that could create a crisis in the country.
Sajith Premadasa said, “We have always supported Sri Lanka in overcoming the crisis. We had a fruitful meeting with the Governor of the Central Bank and the Secretary of the Treasury. We are willing to take on any responsibility, provided we are not involved in anything that could provoke a crisis.
