- First of all, pick the fabric for the shoes you want to make for your baby. Make sure to get the fabric that holds up to the demand of your baby. Try not to pick synthetic fabrics as they won’t let your kid’s feet breathe.
- Apart from the fabric, you need to get some other materials. For instance, you will need fusible interfacing of almost a square foot wide and elastic of 18 inches in length and ⅛ inches of width.
- Now make a shoe pattern. There are three pattern pieces required in making baby shoes for boys or girls. These pattern pieces include the heel, the top and the sole. Start by making a pattern piece for the sole. Make sure that the pattern piece is symmetrical from side to side. For seam allowance, you can add ¼ inch all around.
- Cut the pattern pieces out and pin them into the fabric. You would need a single sole piece for each shoe. Also, you will need a couple of heel pieces and a couple of top pieces.
- Now sew the right sides of the matching heel and top pieces together. However, sew them along the straight edge of both the pattern pieces. Line them up exactly though.
- Now insert half of the elastic into each of the shoes. Fold the heel piece’s top seam, the long straight edge, over the lining side of the pattern piece. This will create a casing for the elastic. Now, stick the elastic into this casing and sew the bottom along. However, make sure not to dew into the elastic.
- Now attach the sole’s top piece. Line up the top piece and the sole piece, with the right sides facing, and pin them together. While ensuring to stay closer to the edge, sew the edge around.
- Now pull the ends of elastic through the holes made into the top piece. Now run each piece into that hole and cut off any excessive piece after pulling it together tightly. Put in some stitches across the elastic ends for securing it.
- Now turn the shoes right-side up and push out all the edges from the inner part. Make sure that the seams are sitting in the right manner.
- Finish up your shoes and add some decorations. Let your baby wear them!
