Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has been criticized by Russia’s chief rabbi, Barrell Lazarus, over the Hitler issue. “It would be better if he (Lavrov) apologized to the Jews and admitted his mistake,” he said.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview with Italian TV that “there was Jewish blood on the body of Adolf Hitler, the Nazi leader in Germany.” Israeli leaders have reacted angrily to the remarks. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid have apologized to the Russian Foreign Minister for his comments on Hitler. Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said in a statement that the remarks were “false.” The use of the Holocaust for political purposes must be stopped. The country’s foreign minister, Yair Lapid, summoned Russia’s ambassador to Israel and demanded an explanation.
Russia’s foreign ministry, however, backed Lavrov’s statement, saying Israel had made its own “historic statement.”
