The Hogan Development Survey (HDS) is an assessment that evaluates 11 personality traits, commonly known as “dark side” traits, that can potentially hamper leaders’ performance. It considers the following dimensions:

Excitable: When stressed, many people become overwhelmed and react impulsively or emotionally.

Skeptical: People tend to be suspicious, cynical, and untrusting of people they don’t know. This wariness can be helpful in some situations but can lead to negative interactions with others, so weighing the pros and cons in any given case is important.

Cautious: People often struggle with being too prudent, risk-averse, and indecisive when making decisions.

Reserved: People are often described as distant, cool, and sometimes unapproachable.

Leisurely: Procrastination, sluggishness, passivity, and a lack of enthusiasm are common challenges faced in life. It’s essential to take control and actively pursue goals to stay motivated.

Bold: People who are overly confident in their abilities, reject feedback and advice, and tend to take risks that may not be necessary can easily find themselves in difficult situations. Staying grounded and remaining humble, and open to constructive criticism is essential.

Mischievous: A tendency towards disobedience, deviation from conventions, and a propensity to challenge authority or accepted standards.

Colorful: The inclination to be craving for attention, meddlesome and boastful.

Imaginative: People often look towards the future with a creative and imaginative mindset while sometimes being considered eccentric and outside of the box regarding their thinking. This can be seen as an unconventional approach but often yields innovative results.

Diligent: A tendency to be excessively meticulous, perfectionistic, and rigid in approach.

Dutiful: People tend to abide by rules, follow traditional ways, and place greater significance on the decisions of people in authority.

Every dimension is categorized between low and high, with people having distinct points along the range for every dimension. The High-Performance Derailment-Score (HDS) enables individuals and organizations to recognize potentially hazardous performance areas and identify strengths that can be used to reduce the likelihood of derailment. Additionally, it also offers valuable guidance on how to exploit these strengths for better results.
