Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has resigned in the wake of the ongoing economic crisis in the country. He resigned on Monday after widespread clashes between his supporters and anti-government protesters. His son has said he will not flee the country even if he resigns as prime minister.
The Times of India gave a live update on the current turmoil in Sri Lanka on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, seven people, including a ruling MP, have been killed in yesterday’s clashes. More than two hundred were injured. Protesters also set fire to the homes of several ministers, MPs, former ministers and politicians close to the Rajapaksa family. Not only that, the protesters also attacked the official residence of Mahinda Rajapaksa. At that moment, he fell into a trance. Later, the police and army rescued him and took him to an unknown place.
On the other hand, Mahinda Rajapaksa’s younger brother, the country’s current president Gotabaya Rajapaksa, has given the army and police the power to arrest anyone without a warrant.
In addition, from now on, the military will be able to detain any person and keep them for 24 hours before handing them over to the police. A government order on Tuesday said the army could search anyone’s personal property, including their personal vehicle.
