Maxwell Purple is an Alternative Rock/Grunge act from Detroit, Michigan. A one-man band and bass extraordinaire, Maxwell Purple creates his distinctive sound by plugging straight into a stack of Marshall amps and letting the rock flow from that wall of sound. Today we are excited to jump into Maxwell Purple’s album Karma, which was released on September 5, 2021 and features both regular and acoustic versions of each song.
Karma kicks off with the regular version of its title track, “Karma”. This track is an electrifying introduction to the live-recorded, crunchy riffage that Maxwell Purple brings to the table with his music. Sporting solid lyrical themes, this track is a great one to start the album with. Next up is “Rockin Out on Route 66”, the shortest track from Karma at four minutes and two seconds. This track starts off with what sounds like a Metallica-inspired riff and maintains the voltage throughout its entire duration. “Rocky” follows and it may be the strongest track on the entire album. As much as I have enjoyed the awesome riffage in the preceding tracks, what we hear in “Rocky” is truly special; this track gives off the same kind of energy as legendary songs like “Iron Man” and it is absolutely epic. The last regular-edit song from Karma is “Baked in Reefer Cake” which manages to be both chunky and mesmerizing and feels like a very strong, complete package of a song.
Starting off the acoustic portion of the album is the acoustic version of “Karma”. A unique take on the original track, I think what I enjoy most here is how much more Maxwell Purple’s vocals take command in this version; this holds true for the other acoustic tracks as well. “Rockin Out on Route 66” is up next and something about the way this one is mixed really allows the lyrics to hit harder and really bring out the meaning of the track even more than the regular edit. Both versions rock but I believe I enjoy the acoustic one more for this track. The acoustic version of “Rocky” is up next and it further cements my feelings that this track is Maxwell Purple’s “Iron Man” in so many ways; it really is a special song no matter how it is performed. The last track we listened to is the acoustic version of “Baked in Reefer Cake” and this version of the song is equally whole in its nature compared to the regular edit – truly a testament to the quality of the songwriting.
Throughout Karma, you get to experience pure garage-grunge rock that is truly the kind of spectacle you will want to experience firsthand. During the regular edits of the tracks, we are treated to heavy, distorted and electrifying moments capable of taking your breath away and during the acoustic versions of the tracks, we get further insight into the expert musicianship that Maxwell Purple features in his music.
